Mettler Family Vineyards 2003 Petite Sirah (Lodi)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
Intense and concentrated in fruit, fully dry, and with lush, thick tannins, this Petite Sirah aims for the front of the pack and succeeds. Flavorwise, it’s rich in blackberries, plum pudding, espresso and spice flavors that finish long and impressively complex. Great now, and should hold and develop over the next decade.  — S.H.  (5/1/2006)

Mettler Family Vineyards 2007 Epicenter Old Vine Zinfandel (Lodi)

  1. $20
Some Zins handle high alcohol well, and so it is with this lusty, delicious example from Lodi. It’s soft and easy to drink, with rich flavors of berries, cherries, currants, smoky oak and spices that turn chocolaty on the finish.  — S.H.  (12/31/2009)

Mettler Family Vineyards 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Lodi)

  1. $24
Full around the edges but leaner at the core. Nonetheless, this has ripe fruit flavors, nuances of orange peel and even a bit of bitter chocolate. It’s juicy, fruity and sizable, exactly what most folks seek in California Cabernet.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)

Mettler Family Vineyards 2006 Epicenter Zinfandel (Lodi)

  1. $20
High alcohol gives this Zin a hot burn, but it’s part of the wine’s personality. That’s along with the chocolate, black currant, cassis and pepper flavors and rich, thick tannins. You’ll either love it or not.  — S.H.  (4/1/2009)

Mettler Family Vineyards 2004 Petite Sirah (Lodi)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
This very dry Petite Sirah has a wealth of cherry, cola, mulberry and spice flavors wrapped into sturdy tannins and acids. It’s rustic, in the way of country wines, but will nicely accompany simple fare, especially barbecue with a rich tomato sauce.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)

A pure expression of California, this Petite Sirah is soft as velvet, and explosively seductive in very ripe blackberry and cherry jam, violet, anise, cocoa and smoky vanilla flavors. It’s a simple wine, but a very delicious one.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)
