Mitchell 1999 Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Clare Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $28
Dark and whole, the full package with nary a flaw. Very rich and spicy, but with enough plump black fruit to support all that spice, licorice and espresso. It’s tight now, almost unyielding, but for fans of masculine Cabs that still feature a sensationally sweet core of fruit, this is terrific stuff.  — M.S.  (12/15/2002)

Mitchell 2002 GSM Red (Clare Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
A GSM, yes, but one with Sangiovese rather than Shiraz in that secondary position. It’s dry grown, handpicked and unoaked, the Sangiovese bringing a pleasant tanginess to complement Grenache’s juicy, black-cherry fruit. Medium-sized, and finishes with black pepper. Imported by Click Wine Group.  — D.T.  (2/1/2006)

Mitchell 2002 Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz (Clare Valley)

  1. $26
A soft, ripe, excellent Shiraz, and drinkable even at this early age. Licorice stands out on the palate, under which mixed plums forge a solid foundation. Finishes, appropriately enough, with black pepper.  — D.T.  (2/1/2004)

Mitchell 2001 Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Clare Valley)

  1. $25
Another Mitchell red that’s drinkable even in its infancy, this Cab has soft but approachable tannins, and a great bouquet of pure plum and grape fruit. The palate shows black currant, mostly, dusted with pastry flour. Yum.  — D.T.  (2/1/2004)

Mitchell 2001 Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz (Clare Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $26
Restrained and medium-bodied in the mouth, this wine’s always of reliably good quality, and this year’s no exception. Plum fruit and chunky meat-and-molasses notes on the nose resurface on the palate, where they wear a heavy coat of chalky tannins. Tasty and elegant.  — D.T.  (2/1/2004)

Mitchell 2001 Watervale Riesling (Clare Valley)

  1. $19
This is a lean, fresh Riesling with white stone fruit at its core. Grass and mineral—even waxy—flavors freshen up the palate, and floral and saffron notes waft from the nose. Lemon rind and viscous sour apple flavors linger on the finish. For this range of flavors to work in harmony, you surely must count elegance and subtlety among its virtues.  — D.T.  (8/1/2003)
