Mitolo 2006 Reiver Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $50
Boasts a dense, inky color, but at this tender age the flavors lack the weight and opulence of the 2005 version. Coffee and cedar notes frame tart blackberries, finishing long and elegantly. It’s juicy and fresh, with plenty of appeal now, yet should age well for up to 10 years.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Mitolo 2006 Savitar Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $66
The color is dark and dense and so are the aromas, which show plenty of vanilla oak and mulberry fruit. As you might expect from winemaker Ben Glaetzer and the Mitolo family, this is a full-bodied Shiraz, albeit not quite as lush and riveting as the 2005 version. The tannins this year are soft, the acids a bit on the tart side, giving the fruit a crisp edge…  — J.C.  (9/1/2008)

Mitolo 2007 G.A.M. Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
Mitolo’s G.A.M. features great freshness and verve this vintage, showcasing mixed berries—raspberries and blackberries—framed by a generous helping of vanilla. Despite 15% alcohol, it comes across as balanced and only medium in body, finishing crisp and long.  — J.C.  (2/1/2010)

Mitolo 2007 Jester Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $23
Impressively textured for such an inexpensive Shiraz, Mitolo’s 2007 Jester is a concentrated, slightly smoky, black-olive laced wine. Briny, smoky, savory notes would pair well with herbed leg of lamb. Drink now–2015.  — J.C.  (3/1/2010)

Mitolo 2009 Jester Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $21
Cedar, chocolate and cherry are the main players, with hints of alfalfa adding a modicum of complexity. It’s full bodied, round and warm, with tannins that seem firmer than many in this price category, making it a good steakhouse red. Drink it now and over the next several years.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)

Mitolo 2007 Reiver Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $55
This vintage of the Reiver seems mintier than others, and at times the mint seemed a dominant feature of this wine, which otherwise offers jammy berry fruit and chocolate aromas and flavors. At 15% abv, it’s not a shy wine, but neither is it as richly textured as might be expected. Drink it 2013–2020.  — J.C.  (3/1/2010)

Mitolo 2007 Serpico Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  1. $75
The partially dried grapes that are used in this wine give it an intensely aromatic and unique character that resembles cherry liqueur, with sprigs of green herbs for garnish. It’s medium-bodied, with an easy, supple style that fades a bit rapidly on the finish.  — J.C.  (11/1/2010)

Mitolo 2005 Jester Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $20
Although a very good wine, this is a bit disappointing coming from winemaker Ben Glaetzer. Blackberry preserve flavors are soft and full-bodied without being especially rich or deep, with hints of vanilla and fresh grasses. Finishes fresh, with tart berry flavors.  — J.C.  (8/1/2007)
