Monte Negro 2006 Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $20
Riper and richer than some standard RDDs, with aromas of tomato, raisin, maple and blackberry. The palate is ripe and grabby, with serious tannins and structure to frame dark fruit, chocolate and brown sugar flavors. A full and positive wine that has restraint. Will settle in the bottle and should be at its best come late 2008/early 2009.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Monte Negro 2004 Crianza Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $33
A light, simple style of RDD with slight concentration, red fruit and some flower blossom. The palate is juicy and easygoing, with racy red fruit, herb notes and a touch of pickle. Fresh and fun, but not all that serious considering the price.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Monte Negro 2004 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $16
Generic and maturing, but still juicy and showing proper tannins and mouthfeel. A middleweight with securing balance and decent fruit intensity, it’s mouthfilling and uncomplicated, with finishing notes of coconut and mocha.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Monte Negro 2001 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $28
Freshness is in demand as the nose shows dampness, tobacco and wood more than bright fruit. In the mouth, there’s oak-driven flavors of vanilla and tobacco accenting basic red fruit. Has a lot of snap and zest but comes off kind of thin and on the mature side. Drink now for best results; its lifespan appears limited.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Monte Negro 2005 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $16
Blackberry and bramble work the nose, with a medium-bodied, generously oaked palate to follow. In the mouth, buttery oak leads the way with dark fruit, wood resin and chewiness coming next. Not overly tannic, but short on the finish. Pretty easygoing as a whole.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)
