Monteabellón 2006 Finca La Blanquera Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
Having only tasted this winery’s basic RdDs, this single-vineyard whopper comes as a huge and pleasant surprise. The nose is pure as can be and driving, with richness, coffee and more. The palate is juicy and intense, with boysenberry, blackberry, toast and chocolate. Very concentrated and powerful; a wine that exudes and also inspires passion. Drink 2012–2021.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Monteabellón 2006 14 Meses en Barrica Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
Dark, heavily oaked and smelling of asphalt, shoe polish and chocolate. The palate is rich and saturated, with a muscular mouthfeel and large, integrated flavors of charred blackberry, cola and chocolate. Finishes creamy and a little syrupy, with a touch of mocha.  — M.S.  (11/1/2009)

Monteabellón 2008 5 Meses en Barrica Red (Ribera del Duero)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $13
Dark and powerfully oaked despite its 5-month pedigree. Mint, tar, shoe polish and blackberry work the bouquet, while the palate is structured and tight but also quite dark and woody. Mocha, butter and pepper flavors carry the finish on this healthy and structured wine that may also be too oaky for its own benefit.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Monteabellón 2009 Avaniel Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $13
Opens with latex and mint scents that yield to cherry and plum aromas. Grabby and acidic in the mouth, with quick, racy plum and raspberry flavors. Juicy but not all that tasty or interesting. A generic style of RDD.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)
