Monteci 2003 San Michele Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $45
From a warm vintage, this modern Amarone is surprisingly fresh, tonic and is packed tight with pretty berry nuances. There’s nice use of wood here that is relegated to a supporting role and the wine also has a sharp mineral vein that keeps it focused.  — M.L.  (12/1/2009)

This is a very pretty Amarone that shows medium intensity in terms of aromas and elegant tones of ripe fruit and spice. There’s a slight tannic bite on the close and the wine spreads long and consistently over the palate.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Monteci 2006 Costa delle Corone Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $110
This is a big wine both in terms of consistency and alcohol (17%). In fact, it’s too big in many respects and it’s hard to image what foods can stand up to this power. The wine is redolent of brambly sour notes of earth and forest floor and there’s a touch of bitter astringency on the close.  — M.L.  (12/15/2011)
