Montemaggiore 2007 Nobile Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah (Dry Creek Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
There aren’t many California Cab-Syrah blends this satisfying. Perhaps the main reason, aside from good viticulture and winemaking, is the source, Dry Creek Valley, where the grapes got sweet and ripe in blackberry, currant, bacon and spice flavors, yet maintained enough acidity for balance. The tannins are a bit tough and brambly, but this is a delicious wine to…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Montemaggiore 2009 Syrafina Estate Grown Syrah-Viognier (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $42
Amazing how the addition of just 3% of Viognier lifts the winery’s Syrah and makes this wine so fine. The white variety’s citrusy acidity and lime flavor uplifts and brightens Syrah’s blackberry and blueberry fruit, giving the wine a zesty punch. Drink now for it’s freshness.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Montemaggiore 2007 Reserve Syrah (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $45
An interesting Syrah and quite a good one despite some youthful vigor. The tannins are aggressive and accentuate the acidity, making the wine feel tough in the mouth. But it’s extraordinarily rich. Floods the palate with intensely ripe blackberries and blueberries, with cool-climate notes of black pepper. Give it a good decant before serving.  — S.H.  (5/1/2010)

Montemaggiore 2008 Paolo’s Vineyard Estate Grown Syrah (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $38
Tastes as sweet and delicious as chocolate-covered blueberries, sprinkled with black pepper, and finished with the warmth of alcohol and a bite of lemony acidity. Try with a grilled steak in gorgonzola sauce.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Montemaggiore 2002 Superiore Red (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $40
This Cabernet-Syrah blend is obviously very ripe, packed with black cherry and chocolate flavors, with interesting herb and pepper notes. There’s a nice edge of tan nins and acids. Sophisticated and intricate, it will pair well with lamb or beef.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Montemaggiore 2009 Paolo’s Vineyard Estate Grown Syrah (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $38
A little too soft for a serious Syrah, especially at this price. But the flavors are enormously rich and complex, ranging from blackberries and blueberries to dark chocolate, bacon, sautéed wild mushrooms, black pepper and dusty Indian spices. Drink now.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Montemaggiore 2002 Paolo's Vineyard Syrah (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $32
A bit tough in tannins, but it seduces with tart plum and ripe cherry flavors, and hints of leather and coffee. It’s a full-bodied, thickly textured wine that could use a year or two to come together.  — W.E.  (9/1/2005)

Montemaggiore 2010 3 Divas White (Russian River Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
This blend of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, in roughly equal measures, is technically incorrect. It’s a little dirty, a little fizzy and a little too sweet for a dry table wine. But you know what? It’s fun to drink, and that’s wine’s ultimate obligation. Shows rich, satisfying flavors of apricots, oranges, peaches, honey and herbs, finished with a dry minerality.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)
