Monticello 2008 Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $72
A terrific Napa Cabernet, dry and smooth and tremendously layered in flavors. Blackberries, blueberries, currants, crême de cassis, anise, dark chocolate and cedar flood the palate and are just delicious. Best of all is the structure, so rich in firm tannins and acidity. Wonderful now, and should develop for at least a decade.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Monticello 2007 Tietjen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection

  1. $65
Deeply scented, a big, powerhouse Cabernet grown on the Rutherford bench. It’s dense, chewy and meaty, showing blackberry jam, blueberry, chocolate and sweet smoky oak. The tannins are thick and furry, as befits such a young, ageable wine. Hold until 2013, and it should develop through 2019.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Monticello 2004 Tietjen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $58
The Rutherford vineyard has been the source of well-regarded Cabs for Monticello and the ’04 is the latest. Compact and ageworthy, it shows well-ripened blackberry, cherry and cola flavors that have been generously oaked. The tannins are firm and sticky now, suggesting development. Best 2008–2012.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)

Monticello 2005 Jefferson Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $38
The Jefferson Cuvée has been a good bet in Napa Cab over the years, showing elegance and power, but also balance. The ’05, which contains a splash of Syrah, is rich in blackberry and dark chocolate flavors, and is made more interesting by the texture, which includes fine acidity and perfectly ripened tannins. Not an ager, but a wine to drink over the next six years.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Monticello 2004 Estate Grown Syrah (Oak Knoll)

  1. $34
This is the first Monticello Syrah I’ve had, and it’s a very impressive one. Grown in the cooler southern part of Napa Valley, it shows crisp acids and a peppery zest that make the blackberry, cherry and chocolate flavors extra enjoyable.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Monticello 2008 Tietjen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  1. $65
Impressively rich and ripe in fruit, offering waves of black cherries and chocolate. Feels soft and lush and luxurious in the mouth, with a sweet oak finish. Certainly dazzles with opulence, but the softness and sweetness makes you wonder about its ageability. So drink between now and 2013 for freshness.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Monticello 2008 Corley Yewell Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $65
Made in the style of Monticello’s 2008s, a ripe, softly delicious wine. It packs lots of berry, cherry, currant and chocolate fruit, with a savory earthiness suggesting green olives. Flashy enough to drink now, and could gain bottle interest over the next six years, if not longer.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Monticello 2005 Estate Syrah (Oak Knoll)

  1. $38
For the past several years, Monticello has been quietly producing deliciously drinkable Syrahs. The ’05 is rich in cassis, cherry, mocha, violet, leather and spicy flavors, wrapped into a smooth, velvety texture.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)
