Monticello Vineyards 2001 Corley Reserve Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
A selection of the better barrels from the Home Ranch, the Reserve is fantastically rich and complex. No mere fruit bomb despite scads of flavors ranging from apples and peaches through pears and mangoes, there’s also a sleek backbone of steel, all of it wrapped in a rich, honeyed texture. The finish is long and intricately constructed of dusty brown spices.  — S.H.  (8/1/2003)

Monticello Vineyards 2001 Proprietary Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
Impresses for its ripely sweet flavors that mass in the mouth and wash across the palate in waves. Currants, cassis, cherries, coffee, vanilla, smoky oak, you name it. The texture is luxurious and smooth as velvet. As big as it is, this wine never loses its harmony and balance.  — S.H.  (2/1/2005)

Monticello Vineyards 1999 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
Rich and sumptuous, this is a magnificently decadent Merlot that oozes ripe grapes and elaborate oak. The flavors veer toward blackberries and cassis, with a delicious taste of French olives. The fruit easily handles the oaky overlay. Editors’ Choice. —S.H.  — S.H.  (2/1/2003)

Monticello Vineyards 2001 Home Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $45
This is stunningly good single-vineyard wine. The fruit shows well-ripened apples and peaches all the way into pineapples and mangoes, offering up a cascade of flavors that tumble across the palate. Oak shadings are generous, but in balance. Displays a crispness and delicacy of acids more usually associated with cooler regions. Absolutely first class.  — S.H.  (8/1/2003)

Monticello Vineyards 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
A very fine wine, rich, full-bodied and sensationally ripe. Floods the mouth with cassis and oak flavors, and the tannins are sweet and intricate. Feels great just to slosh it around the palate.  — S.H.  (2/1/2005)

Monticello Vineyards 2008 Estate Grown Cabernet Franc (Oak Knoll)

  1. $38
One of the prettier Cab Francs on the market, showing fine Napa structure and intricate flavors that grow more complex as the wine warms in the glass. With red and black cherry, red licorice, teriyaki beef and sweetly smoked cedar flavors, it’s a beautiful wine to drink now.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)

Monticello Vineyards 1997 Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $65
Sports an explosively fruity nose of berry and plum, with cloves and toasty oak in support. Medium-weight, with very nice fruit and good structure, it displays some engaging chocolate and spice notes. The finish is brisk and tangy, with bitter cocoa notes and firm, drying tannins. Hold until 2005.  — W.E.  (11/1/2000)

Monticello Vineyards 1999 Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
A fabulously rich, generous wine that oozes over the palate like nectar, carrying along black currant, cassis and herb flavors and substantial flavoring from oak. Although it feels soft on the palate, a hit of tannin kicks in on the finish. —S.H.  — S.H.  (2/1/2003)
