Montirius 2006 Confidential Red (Gigondas)

From a small single parcel in Gigondas, this shows remarkably pure cola and plum fruit, pointed up by plenty of richness on the palate. Compared to Montirius’s 2006 Terre des Aînés, its tannins are chewier and softer at the same time, making it approachable now, yet capable of lasting at least through 2020.

The essence of raspberries here is even more expressive than in the 2005, accented by hints of crushed herbs (garrigue). It’s not as rich or concentrated as the 2005, but features greater elegance and finesse. Drink now-2015, possibly beyond.

Montirius 2001 Clos Montirius Red (Vacqueyras)

A portion of the 111-acre Montirius vineyard is enclosed by ancient oak trees, which protect the vines from the searing winds of the Mistral normal in the Rhône valley. This gives the wine an intensity and density along with dark tannins. Concentrated black fruits have a powerful purity of flavor. Age for 5–10 years. Imported by Vintage ’59 Imports.

Already showing slight color evolution, the nose is intense and complex. Aromas of dusty cherry, woodsy wild strawberry , leather and spice. Full-bodied, creamy, smooth and round in the mouth with flavors of baked fruit and fine herbs. Tannins firm up on the finish, which is long, fresh and savory.

Montirius 2003 Clos Montirius Grenache-Syrah (Vacqueyras)

Still youthfully purple in color, possibly in part because of the elevated proportion of Syrah in the blend (50%). Deeply fruited and complex, mixing raspberry flavors with notes of coffee, tobacco and spice. Drink now-2012.

This 50-50 blend of Syrah and Grenache is a ripe, sweet-fruited wine, with rich jelly flavors and enough acidity to give it balance. Give it at least five years in the cellar.
