Montpellier 2001 Merlot (California)

You’ll be surprised how much richness there is here. Oodles of sweet black cherry fruit, with a hint of oak, and it’s all dry and crisp. Thank the grape glut for this incredible value.

Montpellier 1999 Syrah (California)
Best Buy
Price
$7
Starts with modest cherry-berry fruit aromas with some cedar and vanilla notes that turn almost caramel-like with air. This is a light, tart Syrah that has enough juicy fruit flavors to carry the sweet oak and still finish fruity, with a slight peppery tang.

Montpellier 2003 Merlot (California)

There sure is a lot of fruity concentration in this wine. It fills the mouth with black cherry, blackberry and red plum flavors, with a rich chocolate and coffee note. It’s also very dry and balanced, although a little soft and thin on the finish.

Montpellier 2003 Syrah (California)

Reviewers detected a host of aromas: blueberry confiture, bacon, even floral notes. The medium-weight palate deals blueberry and cassis. Finishes short.

Montpellier 1997 Pinot Noir (California)
Price
$8
Garnet, with an intriguing aroma of damp earth, prunes, licorice, raisins and tobacco. Ripe, perhaps too ripe, and overly tannic in the mouth, leaving an impression of shortness in the finish.

Montpellier 2002 Viognier (California)
Price
$7
Rather sweet for a table wine, but some people will like the sugary peach, honeysuckle and vanilla flavors. Has some nice acids on the finish.

Montpellier 1999 Pinot Noir (California)
Price
$8
Wintergreen, toast and a bit of buttered popcorn are the primary aromas, followed by a palate of chocolaty oak and modest red fruit. The finish is woody and drying.
