Montsarra NV Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $23
The Montsarra brut has really jumped in price compared to previous releases, but it also strikes us as being more complex, complete and sexy than in the past. Expect dusty apple aromas with crispness, while the palate runs full and almost hefty, with real-deal apple and citrus flavors. This is Cava in very good form.  — M.S.  (12/15/2008)

Fine, fizzy bubbles make this particularly inviting in the flute. There’s a nice rich creaminess to the mouthfeel, and it hits the palate with good weight and authority. Lemon and vanilla fill the mouth, and lead to a ripe, clean finish with just a touch of licorice for added interest. Best Buy.  — P.G.  (12/15/2000)

Montsarra NV Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $17
Comes out of the chute with some aggression, but that’s settled by quality apple and grassy aromas. The palate is jumpy and lively, with pleasant, slightly sweet apple and peach flavors. Shows good refinement, ample layering of flavors and a spot of minerality. As a whole, this is good cava.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Montsarra NV Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $16
More in the Champagne style, meaning the nose is yeasty and toasty, and the color is more gold than pale yellow. The palate offers wholesome apple, lemon and green herb flavors, and the finish is dry and peppery, with some bitterness. Strives for more complexity than most cavas, and it gets there for the most part.  — M.S.  (12/15/2007)

Montsarra NV Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $13
The nose is potent and yeasty, with ample nuttiness. It takes time to open, but when it does there is a full blast of apple and some resiny notes that add complexity. The mouthfeel is zesty and lively, and the balance is in proportion. Not run of the mill, this is well worth a try. —M.S.  — M.S.  (12/31/2002)

Sports the usual apple-meets-tropical nose, and while firm acidity gives an impression of freshness, the fruit tilts toward exaggerated citrus and sweet pineapple. Mildly cloying on the finish, with no dryness to balance things off.  — M.S.  (11/1/2009)

Montsarra NV Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $15
Nice in terms of texture, but a bit strange and hard to identify as far as aromas and flavors go. The nose tosses up Sherry and syrup notes, while the flavors run toward Granny Smith apples and lime. Shockingly, the finish is sweet. Confounding and hard to appreciate, but not a bad cava.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)
