From a variety that’s difficult to ripen in California comes this plush, sleek wine, with cola, berry, leather, and currant aromas, and rich, dry flavors. What a nice mouthfeel, velvety smooth, and a slightly bitter, almond-skin finish.

Nice berry-cherry aromas with earth and spice. A light, delicate, high-acid wine that’s on the thin side. Somewhat tart, so it really needs the right food. A well-made, Chianti-style wine.

From an up-and-coming varietal, shows citrus, almond and smoke notes. Really ripe and rich, but the lively acidity keeps it crisp. An easy-drinking white of some complexity, and a good value. Best Buy.

The variety is Lagrein, an Italian grape. The wine tastes “Italian” in the sense of having very high acidity and extreme dryness. There are cherries, but earthier: balsamic-splashed grilled Portebellos and a hint of tamari. This is a good, interesting wine that needs good food.

Here's something a little different. It's very dry, with interesting tobacco, white pepper, sage and citrus flavors that have a depth and complexity that makes this wine special. Try as an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.

A Rhone blend marked by baked, earthy aromas of blackberry tart and coffee, and dry flavors of blackberries. There is a very distinctive taste of chocolatey cassis that persists through the finish, and is very strong, although it is dry. Acids are soft, but the tannins are strong and persistant. A blend of Syrah and Mourvedre.

This Sangiovese wants decanting for a few hours to let it breathe and open up. Right out of the bottle, it’s acidic and tannic, with lots of astringency covering the cherry, red currant and tobacco flavors. Drink now, with rich, oily fare.

Doesn’t say so on the label (and why not?), but this is made from the Lagrein grape. It’s a good, dry, acidic wine, with pleasant cherry, currant and peppery-spice flavors, in a structure like a silky Pinot Noir.
