Mount Eden 2005 Estate Bottled Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $48
A massive Chardonnay, with tremendous grilled pineapple, peach pie, buttered cinnamon toast, butterscotch, caramel and vanilla flavors, with a firm, earthy minerality. Feels fat and glyceriney in the mouth, providing a decadent palate experience, but acidity contributes to the firm, elegant structure. It should age effortlessly for at least six years, changing and…  — S.H.  (2/1/2009)

Mount Eden 2003 Estate Bottled Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
The mountain vineyard somehow manages not only to beautifully ripen the grapes to a great expression of fruit, but also preserves vital acidity and lends a firm layer of minerality. The result is a big, powerful wine that easily absorbs its lavish coat of new oak. The flavors are of candied pineapple tart, Meyer lemon mousse and vanilla custard, with a finish of…  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Mount Eden 2007 Estate Bottled Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
This is a big, vital Chardonnay brimming with fresh acids and oak, whose underlying pineapple, pear and lemon-lime flavors are delicious. Despite the richness, it’s dry and crisp in acidity, with a minerally tang. Drink now.  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Mount Eden 1999 Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
Incredible wine, although some may find it overoaked. Dark gold color. Huge, luscious flavors, oozing with tropical fruits, smoky honey, oriental spices, buttered toast, tangerine, vanilla and crème fraîche. This decadent wine seems thick in the mouth. Editors’ Choice. —S.H.  — S.H.  (2/1/2003)

Mount Eden 2004 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  1. $48
Mount Eden’s estate Chardonnay typically starts out life as a tight, nervous wine. It’s marked by acidity and minerals, and you don’t want to drink it too cold. The ’04 is a lovely young wine, rich and dramatically complex, with layers of pineapples, Meyer lemons, limes, wet stone, creamy yeast and smoky oak, like an important Chablis. Brilliant now, it should…  — S.H.  (7/1/2008)

Mount Eden 2008 Estate Bottled Pinot Noir (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
A brilliant Pinot Noir, dry and enormously concentrated in mountain cherries, raspberries, strawberries and sweet oak. Completely delicious now, but with the acidity, minerality and balance to evolve over the next six years, at least.  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Mount Eden 2002 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $37
A couple of things about this wine are immediately striking: First is the fruit, which is enormously juicy to the point of jamminess, accented by smoky oak. Second is the smooth, supple texture, mainly due to the wonderful tannins. It’s a complex, wholesomely dry wine, delicious now but with the structure to last at least a decade.  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Mount Eden 2005 Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon (Santa Cruz Mountains)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
Mount Eden makes their estate Cab the old-fashioned way: to age. The ’05 is quite tannic and shut down right now, with a hard astringency, especially on the finish. However, it’s rich in black currants, mocha and cedar, and is a natural for many years in the cellar. The score could rise considerably after 2011.  — S.H.  (3/1/2009)
