Mount Horrocks 2001 Cordon Cut Riesling (Clare Valley)
Price
$27
A tremendous, sweet Riesling, unctuous but not cloying. Smells like ripe green apples; tastes like petrol at palate entry, but melts seamlessly into honey, floral and sweet chalk flavors. Winemaker Stephanie Toole says that it “actually goes with desserts…it doesn’t fight with them.” Amen, sister.

Mount Horrocks 2006 Cordon Cut Riesling (Clare Valley)
Price
$31
The grapes are partially severed from the vine, then left to dry prior to harvest. The result is a medium-bodied dessert wine that has become an Australian classic, with intense pineapple and citrus flavors that echo through the long, balanced finish. Imported by USA Wine West.

Mount Horrocks 2002 Cordon Cut Riesling (Clare Valley)
Price
$26
As beautiful as it ever is. Minerally, nectarine and peach aromas lead to honey, apricot and chalk on the palate. Balanced, with good acidity, it finishes clean, with a lasting, minerally close.

Mount Horrocks 2003 Watervale Riesling (Clare Valley)
Editors' Choice
Price
$20
The aromas are tremendous—trading-card powder, fresh river water, even some earth. Sweet dustiness sticks around on the palate, where there’s also some delicate white stone fruit. Finishes very clean, with citrus and peach pit. At once feminine and powerful, it’s a suprisingly nimble wine, considering the vintage.

Mount Horrocks 1999 Shiraz (Clare Valley)
Price
$28
Wide black plum fruit sprawls out on the palate; Clare’s signature chalky-limestoney mouthfeel is in full effect here. There’s a ribbon of rusticity–tobacco, peanut shells, or something–running throughout. Nose is an unusual mix of granola, blueberry and blackberry. As lush as it sounds, don’t forget, it’s from Clare, and bears scant resemblance to a Barossa bruiser.

Mount Horrocks 2004 Riesling (Clare Valley)
Price
$25
This vintage feels just slightly clumsy and big compared to the wine’s usual performance, but it’s still pretty good. Aromas and flavors of peach, white grape and nectarine are lightly dusted in chalk; finishes with a slight scouring spritz. Imported by USA Wine West.

Mount Horrocks 2002 Riesling (Clare Valley)

Zippy and fresh in the mouth, well balanced, with eye-opening fresh green herb and lemon peel flavors. The same green herb, plus some petrol, shows on the nose. A gravelly, minerally finish brings it to a dry close.
