Neil Ellis 2000 Chardonnay (Elgin)

  1. $20
While Neil Ellis’s winery is in Stellenbosch, he gets his Chardonnay for this wine from the cooler region of Elgin. It has sweet, almost tropical-fruit aromas, followed through with spicy, creamy, wood flavors and ripe, generous acidity. Despite its richness, it also has delicacy, as much in the finely judged use of wood as in the clean, elegant fruit.  — R.V.  (7/1/2002)

Fat-bodied but tangy, with grapefruit and lime aromas and flavors. A touch of figginess and a tangerine note on the palate balance the flavor profile. There’s lovely texture—quite full for Sauvignon Blanc—and a long ripe finish.  — M.M.  (3/1/2001)

Neil Ellis 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stellenbosch)

  1. $23
This excellent Cab has a Bordeaux-like nose, with forest floor meeting meaty red fruit and oak. Big tannins offer great structure without overpowering, and the wine has enough acid to feel alive. Barnyard flavors show on the palate, accompanied by complex coffee and red berry. A juxtaposition of Old World structure and New World fruit—this is why South African wine…  — M.D.  (7/1/2006)

Subdued yet elegant, with a heavily oaked, toasty vanilla nose. Big and plump in the mouth, this wine retains a creamy feel, its tropical fruit flavors taking some time to emerge. The long, lingering finish attests to the wine’s depth of character. Imported by Vineyard Brands.  — M.D.  (7/1/2006)

Neil Ellis 2006 Vineyard Selection Sauvignon Blanc (Jonkershoek Valley)

  1. $28
Like most of the wines from Neil Ellis, this Sauvignion Blanc has moxy and elegance wrapped into one. Intense ripe fruit and lemon in the nose and on the palate give the wine a bold character, but good minerality adds a pretty restraint to the final product. An assertive, exciting wine that will pair well with dishes of the same ilk.  — S.K.  (3/1/2008)

Neil Ellis 2007 Chardonnay (Elgin)

  1. $27
This elegant white has aromas of apple, vanilla and green herbs. The palate shows restraint and structure, but the mouthfeel is creamy and the fruit balanced and not overpowered by the wine’s tightness. Overall, a poised wine with extra food pairing potential.  — S.K.  (6/1/2009)
