Nepenthe 2001 The Fugue Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Adelaide Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Winemaker Peter Leske’s 70-30 Cab-Merlot has good spine, with black cherry and red plum fruit at the fore. Cool menthol and black cherry aromas are exhilarating; finishes medium-long and earthy. A classy, fly-under-the-radar-but-impress-the-heck-outta-you wine. Imported by Click Wine Group.  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)

Nepenthe 2005 Tryst Cabernet Sauvignon-Tempranillo-Zinfandel Red (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $15
An interesting blend (70% Cab, 25% Tempranillo, 5% Zin), Tryst represents Nepenthe’s continuing efforts to break out of sterotypical Aussie wines. Vanilla and plum aromas and flavors carry a hint of eucalyptus, buffered by creamy tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now–2012.  — J.C.  (5/1/2008)

Nepenthe 2000 The Fugue Red (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $27
This Bordeaux blend isn’t austere, exactly, but feels a little Old World. Maybe it’s the wine’s dryish tannins and modest size, or maybe it’s that wines from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills just aren’t oversized by definition. It’s a very good wine, though, with a base of black plum and some meat and oak aromas on the nose.  — D.T.  (12/31/2003)

Nepenthe 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (Adelaide)

  1. $16
Initial scents of paint thinner blow off to reveal a tropical cornucopia of mango, pineapple and guava. Meanwhile, the lime-inflected palate is crisp, elegant and sophisticated and ends on a crisp chalk note. Try with fresh seafood.  — J.R.  (8/1/2010)

Nepenthe 2004 Sauvignon Blanc (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $14
My first reaction to this wine was that it’s made in a safe, please-everyone style. With some air, a pretty citrus-pulp flavor and texture also emerges. Very good. Imported by Click Wine Group.  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)

Nepenthe 2006 Unoaked Chardonnay (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $16
This wine nicely displays the fleshy pear, melon and citrus notes of unoaked Chard. It’s plump and medium-bodied, with a clean, refreshing finish. What it isn’t is particularly complex, but it will still go well with any number of seafood or chicken dishes this summer.  — J.C.  (6/1/2008)

Nepenthe 2002 Charleston Pinot Noir (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $20
This Pinot does not show particularly well right out of the bottle—it feels dull, with earth overshadowing all its other attributes—so give it time. With air, it peps up, and some black cherry fruit shows through. Juicy and enjoyable if you give it a few minutes to unfold. Imported by Click Wine Group.  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)

Nepenthe 2004 Tryst White (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $14
Dusty, chalky aromas and flavors coat toned-down grapefruit and fresh herb notes underneath. Dry and understated overall, but enjoyable. A Sem-Sauv blend, with just 5% Pinot Gris thrown in. 162 cases produced. Imported by Click Wine Group.  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)
