Nickel & Nickel 2005 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
This is a stunningly powerful 100% Cabernet, rich in fruit and well-oaked, that shows the authority of Oakville in a great vintage. Flooded with cassis, black cherries, dark chocolate and cedar, it’s nonetheless too young in brisk tannins to fully express itself. A joy to drink, but needs time. Best after 2009 and for many years after.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Nickel & Nickel 2005 Vogt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
A beautiful Howell Mountain Cab that shows its terroir in the firm, rich tannic structure. And what gorgeous tannins they are, so refined and expressive. The fruit is perfectly ripe, suggesting currants, blackberries, red and black cherries, licorice and a hint of milk chocolate. Rewarding now, and should hold and improve for at least a decade.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Nickel & Nickel 2005 Martin Stelling Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $140
A big, powerful wine that needs aging. Lush, ripe fruit, bigtime oak, firm tannins and vital acidity each rule their respective kingdoms. But they’ll come together in time. Massive in black currant, cherry and chocolate flavors, with strong new oaky vanilla and toast influences, the wine needs years to soften. Give it until at least 2010, and it should develop…  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Nickel & Nickel 2002 Dragonfly Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  1. $90
Decadent, hedonistic, all those adjectives don’t do credit to the fancy way this Cab hits the mouth. It’s Renoir in a glass. Soft but firmly structured and well oaked, the complex flavors range from cassis and vanilla to mocha and gingerbread, and are totally dry. Pure Napa Cab, although it’s probably not an ager because of the softness.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Nickel & Nickel 2001 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $75
A stunning Cabernet, rich, pure and powerful. Blackberries, currants, oak and sweet fresh herbs flood the palate. It’s a tannic wine, with a hard-edged mouthfeel, but the tannins are so sweet, it’s tempting to uncork now. Drink right away, or age for 10 years and let it develop magic.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

Nickel & Nickel 2006 Vogt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
This densely structured wine is so dry and tannic the palate just puckers up into resistance. Buried deep down are massive and properly proportioned flavors of blackberries, black currants, dark unsweetened chocolate and smoky new oak. This intense 100% Cabernet should begin to blossom by 2012 and last for many years.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Nickel & Nickel 2006 Martin Stelling Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $140
An enormously rich, extracted Cabernet, with dramatically layered blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate flavors, liberally accented with smoky new oak. The wine finishes bone dry, with considerable tannic astringency. Too tough and gritty to drink now, but should develop effortlessly over the next 6–8 years, at the very least.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Nickel & Nickel 2006 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
Shows classic Oakville tannins that are big, ripe, and intricate, but hard, entirely opposite to the softness of the modern cult style. The fruit suggests blackberries and cassis, enriched with smoky-sweet, spicy oak. It’s a beautifully structured, dry and elegant 100% Cabernet, but it’s too tannic for full enjoyment now. Better 2012–2016.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)
