Nickel & Nickel

The founding partners of Far Niente established Nickel & Nickel Winery in 1997. Located in the heart of Oakville, Nickel & Nickel Vineyards is dedicated to producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. The winery, which opened its doors to the public in 2003, is located on the 42-acre John C. Sullenger vineyard property according to our Nickel & Nickel reviews. While Nickel & Nickel is devoted to producing single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a small collection of single-vineyard Nickel & Nickel wines are produced using Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel. However it is their Cabernet Sauvignon wines that are most revered according to our Nickel & Nickel wine ratings. All Nickel & Nickel vineyards are organically farmed while their state of the art winery is solar powered and annually produces more energy than it consumes making Nickel & Nickel a net-zero user of electricity. Check out our Nickel & Nickel buying guide below to see which wines are right for you.

Nickel & Nickel 2005 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
This is a stunningly powerful 100% Cabernet, rich in fruit and well-oaked, that shows the authority of Oakville in a great vintage. Flooded with cassis, black cherries, dark chocolate and cedar, it’s nonetheless too young in brisk tannins to fully express itself. A joy to drink, but needs time. Best after 2009 and for many years after.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Nickel & Nickel 2009 Martin Stelling Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $155
Unbelievably rich and delicious, this is a joy to drink. It continues the winery’s long record with this vineyard, reaching toward its apex with this 2009. Made from 100% Cabernet and aged in nearly two-thirds new French oak, it’s elaborate, layered and complex, offering juicy notes of blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate, with sweet toast and vanilla…  — S.H.  (11/1/2012)

Nickel & Nickel 2005 Vogt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
A beautiful Howell Mountain Cab that shows its terroir in the firm, rich tannic structure. And what gorgeous tannins they are, so refined and expressive. The fruit is perfectly ripe, suggesting currants, blackberries, red and black cherries, licorice and a hint of milk chocolate. Rewarding now, and should hold and improve for at least a decade.  — S.H.  (11/15/2008)

Nickel & Nickel 2010 Harris Vineyard Merlot (Oakville)

  1. $53
This is a great Merlot that’s intensely concentrated and dazzlingly rich—everything you want a Merlot to be. It’s power packed with black cherries, cherry liqueur, cocoa and sweet oak, with firm, hard tannins. That is, of course, the Nickel & Nickel style. It shows classic Oakville structure and a hard-to-define elegance, making it one of the best Merlots of…  — S.H.  (7/1/2013)

Nickel & Nickel 2001 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $75
A stunning Cabernet, rich, pure and powerful. Blackberries, currants, oak and sweet fresh herbs flood the palate. It’s a tannic wine, with a hard-edged mouthfeel, but the tannins are so sweet, it’s tempting to uncork now. Drink right away, or age for 10 years and let it develop magic.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

Nickel & Nickel 2002 Dragonfly Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  1. $90
Decadent, hedonistic, all those adjectives don’t do credit to the fancy way this Cab hits the mouth. It’s Renoir in a glass. Soft but firmly structured and well oaked, the complex flavors range from cassis and vanilla to mocha and gingerbread, and are totally dry. Pure Napa Cab, although it’s probably not an ager because of the softness.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Nickel & Nickel 2005 Martin Stelling Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $140
A big, powerful wine that needs aging. Lush, ripe fruit, bigtime oak, firm tannins and vital acidity each rule their respective kingdoms. But they’ll come together in time. Massive in black currant, cherry and chocolate flavors, with strong new oaky vanilla and toast influences, the wine needs years to soften. Give it until at least 2010, and it should develop…  — S.H.  (11/29/2008)

Nickel & Nickel 2009 Branding Iron Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
Beautiful in every respect, this has ripe flavors of blackberries, blueberries and cassis. It shows the classic Oakville structure of firm, hard tannins, elegance and ageworthiness. Made from 100% Cabernet, it will reward holding until at least 2018.  — S.H.  (11/1/2012)
