Niepoort 2009 Redoma Branco White (Douro)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
The wood appears slowly in this young wine. 100% barrel fermentation gives it breadth without losing the cream and apple freshness, and the final bite of acidity.  — R.V.  (11/1/2010)

From its youth, this is obviously an ageworthy wine. The tannins, firm black-fruit flavors and intense acidity all point to this wine’s longevity. It shows great balance, with its fruit melding into its dry structure. A beautifully polished wine.  — R.V.  (6/1/2012)

Niepoort 1998 LBV Bottled 2002 Port (Douro)

  1. $22
A Port that is close to a classic vintage Port in quality, because Niepoort makes a traditional style of LBV, which can age in the bottle. This wine is big and tannic, with acidity and flavors of dried fruits. Its dry style and tannins mean it will show well beyond its LBV pedigree, and age well over 10 years. —R.V.  — R.V.  (3/1/2003)

Niepoort 1997 LBV Bottled 2001 Port (Douro)

  1. $22
Balance, dryness and elegance are the hallmarks of this wine. It is fruity, with a sense of structure and delicious acidity to give it freshness. The wine was bottled unfiltered, meaning it should age well in bottle. —R.V.  — R.V.  (3/1/2003)

Niepoort 2001 Late Bottled Vintage Port (Port)

  1. $24
This is like a junior vintage. Because Niepoort bottles its LBVs unfiltered, they have ripeness and balance, while the fruit has great concentration of flavor. This is very rich with many black fruit and dark plum flavors, but at the same time it has a core of structure and tannin, which suggests that it could age. Bottled in 2006.  — R.V.  (11/1/2007)

Niepoort 2001 Redoma (Douro)

  1. $43
North-facing vineyards are the source for this impressively structured, layered wine. Its tannins are huge, but dusty rather than dry, sustaining big, rich fruits. Coffee flavors vie with the dry toast and acidity. This is a wine that just narrowly avoids being over the top, and in doing so turns into something great.  — R.V.  (3/1/2007)

Niepoort 2004 Vertente Red (Douro)

This is a new label from Niepoort. It’s action-packed, velvety with both deliciously sweet fruit and bone-dry tannins. It is round and smooth on top of black, dense fruits. Licorice and acidity dominate the aftertaste.  — R.V.  (3/1/2007)

A Burgundian style Douro wine—a contradiction in terms? Not with Dirk Niepoort, who has produced this delicious spicy wine, with light extract and vivid red berry fruits.  — R.V.  (11/1/2010)
