Deep, dark and rubbery, with masculine plum and blackberry flavors. This wine is like midnight; it’s pure and black as can be, with huge berry and plum flavors and all the bitter chocolate you can imagine. Bold and built like a fort; the best Nieto to date. Tight, centered and delicious.

Inky as night, with lush, ripe aromas of berries, tree bark, cola and all sorts of other herb-infused elixirs. The palate is totally seductive, with cherry and blackberry overflowing. Chewy and round on the finish, with lemony oak kicking in. This is a block wine from a single vineyard and it’s all the way strong.

An impressive Malbec blended from three vineyards ranging from 3,120 to 3,780 feet in elevation. The aromas are inviting and open, with wild berry, spice and toasty notes. Elegant and well balanced in the mouth, with smoky, ripe flavors of berry, plum and earth. Toasty and coconutty on the finish. Drink now through 2014.

Saturated, with aromas of moist earth, prune, tightly woven oak and leather. It’s not a funky, animal-driven style of Syrah; just the opposite, it’s creamy and rich, with waves of chocolate and vanilla crashing alongside chunky black fruit. Seems apparent that the Nieto Senetiner winery found its stride in 2002; all its top wines are excellent.

If you like big Malbecs, this blend of grapes from three elevations is up your alley. Graphite, blackberry, mocha and vanilla aromas are inviting, while the rich, sappy palate houses coffee, cooked berry and coconut flavors. It’s oaky, ripe, heavy and full of power. Drink now–2016.

If you like a burly, colorful red with a ton of fruit, oak and power, then give this Argentinean bruiser a try. The nose exudes warm aromas of tight-grained oak and berry compote, while the massive palate hits like a ton of bricks on the way to a chocolaty, tannic tail. Some may say it’s overdone, but if you’ve tried more than a few Bonarda you’ll peg this as the…

Nothing is hidden in this bruising, forward Cab. The nose is oaky as can be, but also endowed with intense black fruit. The palate might register as soft to some, but there’s still a tannic foundation that bolsters blackberry, spice cake and molasses flavors. Not super long on the finish but intense in a lumbering sort of way. Drink now–2011.

Bold and packed to the gills with black fruit, well-applied oak and rubbery, fresh tannins. As Bonarda goes, this is a clear winner; it’s blowsy and ribald on the nose, with tons of black fruit, coconut and mocha. The palate is firm but not overly hard, with fig, black plum and length to the finish. Drink now through 2012.
