Niner 2005 Fog Catcher Red (Paso Robles)

  1. $50
Here’s a dry, tannic wine, elegantly structured, with deep flavors of blackberries, currants, herbs and cedar. It’s a bit hard and unyielding now, but softens in the glass. Very nice with steak. Now–2011.  — S.H.  (10/1/2009)

Niner 2006 Fog Catcher Red (Paso Robles)

  1. $58
This has been an interesting wine from Niner. Last year’s bottling was terrific. So’s this 2006. At the ripe old age of five, it’s still firm in tannins and even has a cut of acidity that gives the blackberry and blueberry fruit a bite. Tastes fresh and lively, and could improve with 5–6 years in the bottle.  — S.H.  (12/1/2011)

Niner 2007 Fog Catcher Red (Paso Robles)

A Bordeaux-style blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this wine is soft and sweetly luxurious. It offers upfront blackberry, black cherry, red currant, licorice and sandalwood flavors, with a nice edge of tannins. Drink now.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Niner 2006 Bootjack Ranch Syrah (Paso Robles)

  1. $20
A good wine, dry and firm in tannins, although it’s a bit soft and lacking in structure. The flavors are just fine, of briary blackberry jam, sprinkled with crushed black pepper. Drink now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2010)

Niner 2007 Bootjack Ranch Syrah (Paso Robles)

  1. $20
Defines a certain style of Paso Robles red wine, soft in structure, with easy, gentle tannins and ripe, pronounced fruit that’s almost candied in sweetness. But in this case, the blackberry and cherry flavors are totally dry.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Niner 2007 Bootjack Ranch Merlot (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $24
Good, deeply extracted flavors in this darkly soft wine, with blackberries, plums and spicy, chocolaty chai tea. It’s nicely dry. The tannins are a little off, with some ragged, green edges that won’t age away, so drink now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2010)

Niner 2008 Bootjack Ranch Sangiovese (Paso Robles)

  1. $24
With the light body of Pinot Noir, this rustic wine shows the cherry flavors and high acidity associated with Sangiovese. It’s dry and tannic.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Niner 2007 Bootjack Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)

  1. $28
A bit sharp and minty, with some green tannic astringency accompanying the riper fruit flavors of blackberries and cherries. It’s a good, honest wine whose texture is somewhat off.  — S.H.  (10/1/2010)
