Novelty Hill 2005 Stillwater Creek Vineyard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Rich, creamy and lush, this is right up to the very high standard set by the rest of Novelty Hill’s white wines. It’s rare to taste an American Chardonnay with this mix of exotically ripe fruit, baking spices and crisp natural acids. It just hits every base square on, and takes its time rounding third and heading for a home plate finish. A very impressive effort.  — P.G.  (11/1/2007)

Novelty Hill 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $28
A dark and spicy wine, with streaks of mineral and herb buried within very tart, acidic black fruit. This is complex, quite youthful and tightly woven. I think it will require some years to pull itself together, but the balance is here, in a medium-bodied style, showing some herb, some citrus and plenty of muscle. Tasted over many hours after being decanted, it…  — P.G.  (12/1/2007)

Novelty Hill 2006 Stillwater Creek Vineyard Viognier (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
From the first sniff you know it’s Viognier and you can’t wait to splash around in it—it’s just got that indefinable mix of flower, perfume, citrus rind and stone fruit that typifies the finest Washington Viogniers. The flavors are beautifully defined, racy and sharp, walking the high wire between bitter and hot with amazing grace and dexterity.  — P.G.  (11/1/2008)

This is clearly one of the finest Viogniers in the state, succulent and creamy, taking the varietal flavors of peach and pear and adding streaks of vanilla and caramel—not overdone, just hints that add richness to the flavors and roundness in the mouth.  — P.G.  (12/1/2009)

Firm, spicy and loaded with generous tropical fruits, this has three different clones in the blend, yielding exceptional depth and complexity. The wine moves gracefully from citrus to tropical fruits, with a firm core balanced on juicy acids.  — P.G.  (2/1/2011)

Novelty Hill 2010 Stillwater Creek Vineyard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
A strong whiff of new French oak hits the nostrils when this is first opened, but with some airing it develops into an excellent, deeply concentrated Chardonnay. Apple, pear, melon and papaya flavors are all in play, with enough natural acidity to keep the wine lively and fresh. The finish has ample toast, and rolls along through a smooth and satisfying conclusion.  — P.G.  (2/1/2013)

Novelty Hill 2003 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

Ripe black fruit and spicy, smoky scents pull you into this smooth and lush gem of a Syrah. Dense and fruit-driven, it’s a showcase of the superripe 2003 vintage, which blessed Washington’s Syrahs with unprecedented power.  — P.G.  (10/1/2006)

Novelty Hill 2005 Stillwater Creek Vineyard Sémillon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $16
This is just about perfect Sémillon— the gorgeous fruit has more flesh and breadth with flavors suggesting ripe fig, melon and citrus. The use of oak is judicious and thoughtful; it adds grace notes without dominating. You can’t help but wonder why this grape remains such a novelty (except, ironically, at Novelty Hill!). It’s seductive, delicious and unique.  — P.G.  (12/1/2007)
