Dark and racy, with a Northern Rhône-style aroma of black pepper, cedar and black currants, but there’s nothing Rhône-like about the flavor. It’s distinctly California, with soft, sweetly ripe tannins bursting with blackberry jam, black currants, anise, vanilla and sweet oak flavors. The wine is fully dry. Absolutely first-rate Syrah.

Fans of the Northern Rhône might argue that this Syrah is too fruity, but there’s no questioning its boldly Californian beauty. It thrills the palate with explosive blackberries, blueberries, cherries, currants, cocoa and spices, yet is balanced in refined tannins, and completely dry on the finish. In other words, superb.

Novy 2008 Rosella's Vineyard Syrah (Santa Lucia Highlands)

Syrah master Novy has given us a beautiful Syrah to drink now with rich lamb, beef and pork dishes, or perhaps a Latin-inspired black bean soup. It’s rich, softly lush and dry, and the blackberry, currant, mocha and sandalwood flavors have exciting edges of salty cured meats and freshly crushed black pepper. Really exquisite, but only 263 cases were produced.

Beautiful, irresistable Syrah, lush and sweet in fruit and oak. Soft and velvety, it offers layers of puréed raspberries, cherries, blackberries, blueberries and chocolate, with a rich edge of toasted marshmallow, gingerbread and butterscotch. Yet it’s dry, with modest alcohol.

Novy 2007 Parsons' Vineyard Syrah (Russian River Valley)

A Syrah of considerable proportions, made in the Novy style of power and ripeness. It’s suprising that Novy didn’t priced it higher, as it has that extractive richness and inherent wealth of texture that are the domain of expensive red wines. Just tremendous in blackberries, chocolate and spices, with the most beautiful tannins. Drink now, with the finest meats.

Novy 2000 Page-Nord Syrah (Napa Valley)

The vineyard is in southern Napa, a relatively cool region. The wine is very dark, with a purple color, and it stains the glass. It smells tight, earthy and young now, offering up just a tease of cassis. But it erupts on the palate with an explosion of berries, spices and fine tannins. Extraordinarily rich now, but will unquestionably develop.

This dramatic and stunningly rich Syrah shows depth, power and ripely smooth, finely ground tannins that make it drinkable now. Black currants, licorice, mocha, violets, mushu plum sauce, black pepper and Provençal herbs fascinate as the wine changes in the glass. Drink now through 2010.

Shows the way this vineyard and appellation ripen Syrah so well. Just overpowers the palate with cassis, licorice, leather and dark unsweetened, slightly bitter baker’s chocolate, with a potent dose of freshly crushed pepper. So impressive, the perfect expression of great terroir in a great, cool vintage. But it’s very tannic. Drink now through 2013.
