Phinny Hill is in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA of Washington, a prestigious location near Champoux and other high end growers. This Carmenère has 5% Syrah added, but the varietal character dominates, with strong green leaf and herb flavors. The tannins are woody and the fruit fragrant with blackberry and cassis. Tight and unyielding, with a dominating Band-Aid streak that does not disappear even after many hours of breathing time. This is Nuthatch’s blend of 64% Cabernet Franc, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah , and there are noticeable green streaks running through both fruit and tannin. But it’s a well-made wine, with a supple mouthfeel, and some plummy fruit flavor threaded through the herbs. Best drunk with a sizzling steak.  — P.G.  (12/22/2011)
