O. Fournier 2004 Alfa Crux Malbec (Uco Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
Talk about a deep, luscious wine. The bouquet emits a magnetic blend of chocolate cake, fine leather and berry marmalade, while the midsection is downright delicious but also very pure and natural despite the wine seeing 20 months of new oak. ACrux catches and holds every note, and it should age well for another 5 to 8 years.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

O. Fournier 2006 Alfa Spiga Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $47
A fine and intricate heavyweight that blends power and ripeness with complexity and class. Quality leather, spice, toast and dark berry aromas set up a structured, grippy palate with generous black fruit flavors, tobacco notes and chewy tannins. Long, sweet and rewarding on the finish. Drink now through 2016.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Brilliantly colored, with dynamite concentration and lovely black fruit and earthy aromas. Precise on the palate but also big and muscular, with silky tannins, grip and a late rush of deftly applied French oak. Delicious and a fine reflection of the Uco Valley, Argentina’s top Malbec region.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

O. Fournier 2004 Alfa Crux Red Wine (Uco Valley)

  1. $42
Amazingly ripe and deep wine from 2004, so it’s all that it’s going to be. Thick and figgy aromas bring bacon, mint and cool, cushiony cola notes. The palate is megasaturated with chocolaty oak and dark berry power galore. Remains oaky on the finish; a massive wine to drink now through 2017.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)

O. Fournier 2004 AlfaSpiga Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $54
Twenty months in oak has created coconut aromas to go with the ripe, sappy boysenberry scents that are draped on this studly, full-force RDD. The palate is a powder keg of massive blackberry, boysenberry and chocolate flavors, and the finish is like a retaining wall that keeps everything focused on the impressive midpalate. Great if you like ’em big. Imported by…  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

O. Fournier 2004 Ribera del Duero Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $85
Rock-solid Tempranillo that wows with its richness and depth, but also shows a touch of ripeness-based sweetness that critics could see as candied and simple. But that’s splitting hairs, and we prefer to compliment the wine’s dynamite intensity and its rangy finish. Maybe a touch bigger and less complex than Fournier’s AlfaSpiga, but still excellent. O. Fournier 2008 Alfa Centauri Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc-Merlot Red (Maule Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
This is dense, lusty and attractive from the beginning, with rich black-fruit, coconut, tobacco and pine aromas. It feels pure and deep, with ribald acids that keep the pulse up and push blackberry, plum and savory cured-meat flavors. The finish remains savory and saucy. Drink this Cabernet Franc-Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend now–2017.  — M.S.  (9/1/2012)

This small-production blend of Syrah and Cabernet is ready to drink and showing all sorts of complexity and class. Mature oak aromas frame tobacco, cedar and mild fruit scents.
