Oberon 2007 Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
There’s quite an impressive Cabernet in here, but it’s nowhere near ready to drink now. All the parts are there: rich, pure tannins, ripe blackberry and currant fruit, sweet toasty oak and a fine edge of acidity. But it all needs time to knit together. Hold until around 2014 and see what happens.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Oberon 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

This release represents a gigantic leap forward for Oberon in their basic Cabernet Sauvignon. Past releases have been so-so. This one’s terrific. Blended from vineyards all over the valley, it shows all the hallmarks of a Napa Cab you want. It’s dry, full-bodied and impressively ripe in blackberries, currants, licorice and oak, with a long, smooth finish.  — S.H.  (2/1/2012)

With a touch of green grass and gooseberry, this refreshing Sauvignon Blanc features richer flavors of pineapples, lemons, limes, honeysuckle and vanilla. It’s a streamlined, elegant wine, at a very good price.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Oberon 2011 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)

Tasty, zesty and rich, this would be a versatile accompaniment to a wide range of foods. It charms with its flavors of Asian pear, lime, fig, vanilla and spice, bearing vigorous acidity that balances out what seems to be some sweetness.  — S.H.  (12/1/2012)

Lots to admire in this wine, from the smooth, complex tannins to the classic blackberry and cassis flavors. However, it’s very acidic, surprising the palate with the sting of a jellyfish. Hard to predict its future.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Oberon 2009 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $22
A sound, likeable Merlot, whose fruity richness, soft tannins and relatively modest price make it a good buy. It’s forward in blackberry jam, cassis, red licorice and smoky oak flavors.  — S.H.  (5/1/2012)

Tastes one-dimensional and fruity, like cherries and blackberries baked into a pie. Toasty oak adds vanilla and caramel sweetness. Ultimately, a good, everyday Cab.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)

Oberon 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $25
This is elaborate, but too soft for a great Napa Cabernet. That absence of structure accentuates its ripeness, giving it tastes of candied cherry and licorice. On the plus side, it’s dry and smooth, with lots of smoky new French oak. Drink now.  — S.H.  (12/1/2012)
