Obsidian 2002 Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Lake County)
Price
$25
It is no insult to Lake County to say this is the best Cabernet I have ever had from there. It smells importantly ripe and finely oaked, and possesses succulent cassis, cherry and chocolate flavors, with an earthy edge of fine herbs. From Acacia’s Michael Terrien.

Obsidian 2005 Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Hills Lake County)
Price
$27
This is the best Obsidian Cab since the 2002, and for similar reasons. It was a good vintage for Cabernet. The wine is rich and peppery and lush in black currant flavors, with beautifully sculpted, ripe tannins. Provides more evidence that this Red Hills of Lake County appellation has enormous potential for Cabernet.

Obsidian 2004 Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Syrah (Red Hills Lake County)
Price
$25
This needs work, but it’s promising for several reasons. The fruit is tremendous in sappy blackberry jam, blueberries and roasted coffee bean. The tannins are huge, but smooth and ripe. The oak is clunky, but this is definitely a Syrah to watch.

Obsidian 2003 Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Syrah (Red Hills Lake County)
Price
$25
Seems a bit herbal or grassy at first, then reveals more mixed berries and spice with air. But it turns irretrievably tannic on the finish, with flavors of over steeped berry zinger tea. Probably best consumed young, for its exuberant fruit.
