Omaka Springs 2002 Winemaker's Selection Chardonnay (Marlborough)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
Buttery on the nose, but nicely balanced, with scents of honey, peaches and limes giving way to apple, peach and citrus flavors. Plump in the mouth without being heavy, and it even picks up a hint of chalky minerality on the finish. Imported by T.G.I.C. Importers.  — J.C.  (7/1/2005)

Omaka Springs 2006 Falveys Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $24
This is very nice, with just enough herbaceousness to mark it as New Zealand, yet not so much as to be overwhelming. Green pea scents are interspersed with hints of honey and fig, while the finish is a bit short but crisp and filled with citrus and chalk.  — J.C.  (3/1/2007)

Omaka Springs 2001 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $17
Sharp, piercing aromas of pineapple and steel yield a bit prior to a tangy, citrusy palate. There’s some chalk and slate on the finish, which adds an element of complexity. The only noticeable fault here is a candied sweetness at the tail end  — W.E.  (8/1/2002)

Omaka Springs 2003 Riesling (Marlborough)

  1. $17
Apple, pear and quince aromas segue into a pleasant mix of tree and stone fruits on the palate, wrapped up by a zippy, citrusy finish. Best Riesling yet from this producer, worth trying if you can find it.  — J.C.  (8/1/2004)

Omaka Springs 2007 Falveys Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $21
Blends ripe tropical fruit—even including hints of mango and banana—with more pungent notes in a full-bodied, almost sweet-seeming Sauvignon Blanc. Flashy upfront, then fades a bit on the finish.  — J.C.  (12/31/2007)

Omaka Springs 2002 Pinot Gris (Marlborough)

  1. $15
Pinot Gris is quickly becoming the hot white grape in New Zealand, and this is a fine example. Ripe, honeyed pear and apple fruit provides plenty of weight, but there’s also crisp acidity to provide balance. Going by taste alone, it may have a touch of residual sugar to help round out the mouthfeel and counter the zesty acids, but the hint of sweetness will only…  — J.C.  (11/15/2003)

Omaka Springs 2004 Riesling (Marlborough)

  1. $17
Made in a lean, racy style, this Marlborough Riesling combines moderate alcohol (12.5%) with minimal residual sugar to make a crisp, refreshing wine well suited to washing down shellfish. Scents of stones (flint) and lime pick up hints of nectarine before finishing tart and clean. Imported by T.G.I.C. Importers.  — J.C.  (7/1/2005)
