This gentle wine does what Paso so effortlessly accomplishes. It’s soft, juicy and filled with forward fruit flavor, but is by no means one-dimensional. Cherries, blackberries, mocha and peppery spices unfold in waves, and the finish is clean and dry.

Pretty good red wine here, nice and juicy, with well-etched flavors of blackberries and tobacco. The texture is especially pleasing and limpid. Needs an extra edge of depth and complexity to hit the big time, but it sure is delicious.

Here’s a wine with quite a bit of juicy black cherry jam in it. It’s youthful and clean, with nice tannins and a good shot of stimulating acidity. It’s fully dry, but ripe and sweet in rich fruit. Good drinking!

Here’s a juicy, fruit-driven wine that frames blueberry, blackberry and plum jam flavors in considerable tannins. The wine is kind of mouth-numbing and needs time to soften up, but it should evolve to a richer softness in a few years. Would be great with roasted leg of lamb.

The most concentrated and fruity of Opolo’s ’03 Zins features powerful blackcurrant and chocolate. Like the others, it’s soft in acids and lush in tannins. Finishes rather hot, but a terrific wine for a barbecue on a summer evening.

From a vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a young, jammy wine bursting with candied flavors of raspberries and cherries. It drinks very concentrated and intense. There’s a caramelly note that may come from well-charred barrels in this dry, full-bodied wine.

A good wine. It’s a little tough and gritty in texture, but shows ripe flavors of black currants, mocha and spices. Finishes sweet and tannic, but not an ager.
