Orchid Hill 2004 Syrah (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
The problem with this Syrah is excessive sweetness. It tastes more like an off-dry or dessert wine than a dry table wine, with jellied black cherry, black raspberry, red currant and pepper flavors, although that could be due to very high alcohol rather than residual sugar. If you like your reds sweet, this one’s for you.  — S.H.  (11/1/2008)

Sugary sweet and direct, with pastry flavors of pineapples, apricots and honeysuckle. Crisp acidity provides some balance.  — S.H.  (9/1/2009)

An awkward wine. The alcohol is very high and hot and the wine is a little sweet, with Lifesaver candy flavors.  — S.H.  (2/1/2007)

Overripe and unbalanced, with a Porty aroma and raisiny flavors that turn harsh and dry in the mouth.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)

Orchid Hill 2006 Pinot Noir (Paso Robles)

  1. $30
Tastes as sugary as a cherry-granola candy bar. Good structure, but the sweetness level is way too high.  — S.H.  (9/1/2009)
