Orfila 1998 Lotus Cuvée Viognier (San Pasqual)

  1. $28
Pricey, but an example of the promise this area shows for this white Rhône variety. It’s an interesting wine, dry and crisp, yet rich in fruity extract. The creamy-smooth texture frames the zesty peach, citrus, herb, chocolate and floral flavors perfectly. —S.H.  — S.H.  (4/1/2002)

Orfila 1998 Val de la Mer - Estate Syrah (San Pasqual)

  1. $24
Dark aromas and flavors of coffee and cola share center stage with cedar and black cherries. Despite the heavy flavors, the wine is a bit on the light side, but smooth and harmonious. Finishes with hints of espresso and smooth, velvety tannins.  — W.E.  (11/1/2001)

Orfila 2001 Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)

  1. $41
Yes, the vintage is correct. Who else is releasing a 2001 Pinot in 2006? Yet it’s a good wine, dry, clean and silky, with cherry pie, cola, rosehip tea and spice flavors. That Edna Valley acidity has preserved it well.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Orfila NV Lotus Lot #45 White (San Pasqual)

  1. $28
Powerful aromatics lead to powerful fruity flavors in this Rhône-style wine. A blend of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, it explodes in apricot and peach juice, vanilla bean and honeysuckle flavors that finish dry and spicy. The high alcohol isn’t a problem.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Orfila 1997 Ambassador's Reserve Limited B Chardonnay (San Diego County)

  1. $15
More than half the fruit is from San Diego, where Orfila is based. Full, earthy aromas and palate qualities set the stage for a long, woody finish. It’s on the heavy-chunky side of the fence, and thus scores few points for elegance.  — W.E.  (6/1/2000)

Orfila 2004 Gold Rush Zinfandel (California)

  1. $24
Have some warm country Zin. It’s black in color, with high alcohol, soft acids and Porty flavors of blackberry essence, sweetened espresso and chocolate truffle.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Orfila NV Lotus Cuvee Lot #123 White (San Pasqual)

  1. $28
This Rhône blend is ripe to the point of off-dry, with flamboyant flavors of ripe white peaches, lime pie, vanilla custard and smoke. With a creamy texture, it has a long aftertaste.  — S.H.  (5/1/2005)

Orfila 2003 Ambassador's Reserve Merlot (San Diego County)

  1. $28
A little more work is needed but the promise seems to be there with this wine from south of L.A. It’s ripe enough in cherry, blackberry, plum and coffee flavors, with good tannins and acidity.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)
