American oak can smell like cloves, and this wine, which was aged in American oak, does, along with meat, chocolate and blackberries. It’s juicy in the mouth, with some numbing tannins. A little earthy and rough around the edges, and finishes with an almond-skin bitterness.

Owen's Estate 1999 Shiraz (South Australia-Victoria)

Sutble aromas of infield dust, cedar and red clay plus dark fruit were, to all reviewers, too mute. So dark that it’s nearly opaque purple-black, it shows burned oak, raisin and overripe berries on the palate. Finishes bland, with soy and mineral notes.
