Palacios Remondo 2001 Propiedad Herencia Remondo Red (Rioja)
Price
$28
Alvaro Palacios is indeed a great winemaker, as is evidenced by this blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Aromas of bright cherry signify power and structure, yet it’s easy as sin to drink. Shows model integration, bursting berry flavors and ripe tannins. Tasted several times during the past year but not rated until now; this wine just keeps…

Palacios Remondo 2001 Propiedad Herencia Remondo Red (Rioja)
Price
$25
The peak of the Palacios family’s Rioja production, it’s gorgeous and aromatic. It has red fruit, flowers and handsome oak on the nose. The palate is smooth and chewy, with expressive plum, berry and apple skin flavors. Power-packed but balanced, offering a proper jolt and immediate drinkability.

Palacios Remondo 2005 Propiedad Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$40
A clear step up from the overdone 2003 Propiedad, this vintage is sweet and easy to like. There’s a blast of hickory smoke on the new-oak nose, but also black fruit and molasses. The ripe palate deals chewy fruit, medium tannins and moderate length. It’s a charming but blunt wine, and all in all it’s probably not one to hold for too long. Drink now through 2009.

Palacios Remondo 2006 Plácet Viura (Rioja)
Price
$30
The gold standard among Viura-based wines from Rioja has to be Placét from Palacios Remondo. Oak plays a big role here, and the nose wows with spice and cinnamon apple. There’s more ripe apple and spice in the mouth, along with excellent acidity and textural creaminess. A stately wine to drink with fish, veal and poultry.

Palacios Remondo 2004 La Montesa Red (Rioja)
Price
$20
Dark and spicy, with rubber and baked-fruit aromas giving way to herbs, clove and other alluring spice scents. As might be expected from a wine bearing Alvaro Palacios’ signature and approval, the final product is smart and snappy, with blackberry, herbs and barrel char all making themselves noticed. Good now and for the next several years.

Palacios Remondo 2006 La Montesa Red (Rioja)
Price
$20
Opens with rich aromas of raisin, licorice, black plum and molasses that put it on the cusp of overripe. The palate is rich and gritty, with deep berry and molasses flavors. Generous for sure, but also slightly baked and sweet. Tastes like a warm-climate, warm-vintage wine. Drink now.

Candied and sweet smelling but still honest on the nose, with spice, cinnamon and black cherry aromas. The palate is fresh and healthy feeling, with mildly creamy cherry, berry and mocha flavors. Finishes creamy as well, with lasting sweetness. 60% Garnacha with 35% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo.

Palacios Remondo 2006 La Vendimia Red (Rioja)
Price
$14
Exotic, reflective strawberry and tea notes open this lighter-bodied, not-so- serious Rioja. Next in line is a mouthfilling blend of blackberry and cassis, but with ample acidity so that it avoids any weighty pitfalls. Finishes soft, with a swath of oaky vanilla flavor. Drink this 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha now and over the next 18 months.
