Wild roses and forest undergrowth wrap their persistent tendrils around ripe cherries and just a hint of toast on the nose of this complex and seductive offering. Finishes with enough structure to suggest trying again in a couple of years, once the midpalate has filled out.

Fragrant and voluptuous, with beetroot and black-cherry aromas spiced with smoky oak. Huge extract, filled with cola and peppery wild-berry fruit. Tannins are soft, with fine acidity. The spicy finish goes on forever. This is a limpid, supple, sweetly feminine wine, and immediately drinkable.

Like every Panther Creek Pinot we tasted, there is lots of oak—too much for one of our panelists. But there’s also a bounty of pristine black fruit aromas and smoky bacon. In the mouth, it’s lush, still with ample barrel char, but with even more lip-smacking plum fruit.

A terrific vintage for the Freedom Hill bottling, the 2008 displays a firm, concentrated core of cranberry, raspberry and pie-cherry fruit flavors. Wrapped in plenty of toasty new oak, the wine is powerful and mouth-coating, balanced with juicy acidity, and rolls on through a lengthy, satisfying finish.

An ultrapure nose and tons of polish and precision define this tasty reserve-style blend of several vineyards. Pretty much an easy-drinker, with an undercurrent of sweet cherries and vanilla. It hits all chords and fades away smooth. Style and power come in proper proportions. Will age nicely for at least five years.

Tree bark and pine needles mark the aromas, adding woodsy complexity and weight to ripe black cherries. Full and somewhat backward, this needs a few years to sort itself out and fully express its generous nature, but you can sense the future now in its power and velvety texture.

A sniff reveals smoked meats, bacon, coffee and leather. The flavors are clean and pure—there’s an abundance of inky black cherry and plum. The balance between juicy flavorful fruit and firm mouthcoating tannins is just right. Muscular but not overbuilt.

Lovely scents of blue and black berries open into an excellent wine from this well-known vineyard. Cherry cola and molasses flesh out the midpalate flavors, and the fruit has a brambly quality that is almost like Zinfandel. Expressive and detailed.
