Pascual Toso 2006 Finca Pedregal Single Vineyard Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)
-
$82
Outstanding for Argentina. Toso’s Perdriel rises above the masses by setting out a spread of minty, coconut aromas followed by intense black raspberry, chocolate, coconut and herb flavors. It’s pure, loving and generous, with a long, mildly woody finish and lots of mouthfeel and style. Big, modern and very much what high-end Malbec (with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) is about.

Steady as a rock, with smoky, charred aromas mixed with beautiful black fruit scents as well as accents of licorice and earth. For anyone enthralled with New World ripeness, this is the ticket. It’s a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is lush, packed with blackberry and boysenberry flavors, and viscous on the finish. Complete and special at…

Pascual Toso 2006 Magdalena Toso Limited 28 Barrels Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

$117
Bargain hunters need not apply, but if you’re looking for a pricey but serious Argentine red, the ’06 Magdalena Toso is a fine place to begin. At 70% Malbec and 30% Cab, it’s stout, dark and rich. Aromas of coconut and mint announce new French oak, while the density and purity of the blackberry and plum fruit is commendable. Finishes long and ripe, with spice…

Pascual Toso 2007 Barrancas Vineyards Alta Reserve Syrah (Mendoza)

Extremely ripe and concentrated but arguably a bit too massive for its own good. That said, we love the wine’s tobacco, cassis and inky qualities, but worry a little about the lemony oak character and overall potency. Deep as midnight in terms of flavors, with black fruits galore setting up a richly packed, ultraripe finish. New World to the max but very tasty and rich.

All sorts of smoky berry, cola and controlled toast aromas get this wine going in the right direction. It tastes very good, with pure, less than bashful plum and cola flavors leading straight to a fruity, lasting finish. This may not have much sauvage, old world Syrah character; but for Argentina it’s made right and registers from head to toe.
