Pascual Toso 2005 Finca Pedregal Single Vineyard Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  1. $82
Steady as a rock, with smoky, charred aromas mixed with beautiful black fruit scents as well as accents of licorice and earth. For anyone enthralled with New World ripeness, this is the ticket. It’s a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is lush, packed with blackberry and boysenberry flavors, and viscous on the finish. Complete and special at…  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)

Pascual Toso 2006 Finca Pedregal Single Vineyard Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  1. $82
Outstanding for Argentina. Toso’s Perdriel rises above the masses by setting out a spread of minty, coconut aromas followed by intense black raspberry, chocolate, coconut and herb flavors. It’s pure, loving and generous, with a long, mildly woody finish and lots of mouthfeel and style. Big, modern and very much what high-end Malbec (with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) is about.  — M.S.  (12/31/2008)

Pascual Toso 2007 Alta Reserva Las Barrancas Vineyards Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $36
A big boy with black fruit, cedar, tobacco and chocolate cake aromas. All early signs say this one is here for the long haul; it is aggressive but serious, with fine acids and tannins hoisting deep black plum and berry flavors. Chocolate, mocha and pepper work the long finish. Best in 2010–13.  — M.S.  (12/1/2009)

Pascual Toso 2006 Magdalena Toso Limited 28 Barrels Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $117
Bargain hunters need not apply, but if you’re looking for a pricey but serious Argentine red, the ’06 Magdalena Toso is a fine place to begin. At 70% Malbec and 30% Cab, it’s stout, dark and rich. Aromas of coconut and mint announce new French oak, while the density and purity of the blackberry and plum fruit is commendable. Finishes long and ripe, with spice…  — M.S.  (12/31/2008)

Pascual Toso 2006 Maipu Vineyards Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
A year or two ago when Paul Hobbs began consulting for Toso things changed for the better. This is the rare Best Buy that can swim with the big fish and give them a run for the money. Pop the cork and enjoy lusty dark aromas of Turkish tobacco and berry compote. In the mouth, there’s a riot of fruit flavors to ponder followed by a smooth, lusty finish.  — M.S.  (12/1/2007)

Pascual Toso 2007 Barrancas Vineyards Alta Reserve Syrah (Mendoza)

  1. $36
Extremely ripe and concentrated but arguably a bit too massive for its own good. That said, we love the wine’s tobacco, cassis and inky qualities, but worry a little about the lemony oak character and overall potency. Deep as midnight in terms of flavors, with black fruits galore setting up a richly packed, ultraripe finish. New World to the max but very tasty and rich.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Pascual Toso 2008 Reserve Las Barrancas Vineyards Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Despite early woody aromas of sawdust and pencil shavings, this is yet another in a long line of fine Malbecs from Pascual Toso. The black-fruit nose equals pure power (and oak), while the palate is a potent brew of lusty blackberry, mocha and fine acidity. Long and lasting on the finish. A fine example of Mendoza Malbec.  — M.S.  (11/1/2010)

Pascual Toso 2006 Reserve Las Barrancas Vineyards Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $20
With Toso’s basic 2006 Malbec being named our Best Buy of the Year for 2007, we find ourselves a bit pinned in judging this higher-priced Reserve Malbec from the same year. With the microscope turned up, however, we find a well-oaked wine with pencil-shaving aromas yielding to coconut and subtle black fruit notes. The palate is dense, structured and full of cherry…  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)
