Tulin opens with thick concentration and a dark, brooding appearance. The aromas are intense and extremely inviting and recall blackberry, cherry, eucalyptus leaf, cola, underbrush and licorice. The thickness and density in the mouth creates a big, satisfying sensation and the wine ends with a soft, plush finish. Drink after 2015.

Pelissero 2007 Nubiola Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)

Nebbiolo, the grape, and Nubiola, the designate name, stem from the same Italian word: nebbia, or “fog” that regularly blankets the Langhe. This bright Barbaresco is defined by a distinctive aroma of tar or freshly applied street asphalt that is typical of the variety. Additional aromas include back fruit, prune and plum. The mouthfeel is streamlined, tight and elegant.

Nubiola is a pulpy, thickly concentrated Nebbiolo with brambly notes of forest fruit, moist earth, leather, spice and toasted hazelnut. The wine is still young, astringent and needs a few more years of cellar aging before it softens up.

The wine opens with thick density and a pretty garnet hue and is enhanced by earthy aromas of wet earth and black truffle. But there’s also chocolate, cinnamon and sweet allspice here and an unexpected herbal note on the close. The wine tastes linear and immediate with drying mineral notes.

The well-priced Nubiola offers well-integrated notes of black currant, vanilla and allspice with deep layers of toasted wood and cured meats that come into view as the wine spends more time in the glass. The tannins are drying and firm and the wine ends with crisp firmness and tannic determination. Drink after 2010.

Tulin offers characteristically earthy aromas of porcino mushroom with pressed violets and animal or leather like notes. That said, the aromas are warm and inviting and offer interesting depth and complexity. In the mouth, the wine’s precise and sharp nature is emphasized by its bright acidity and drying tannins.
