Penascal 2002 Sauvignon Blanc (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)
Best Buy
Price
$7
Who knew that crisp, varietally correct Sauvignon Blanc was being made on the plains of central Spain? The nose deals pine and bell pepper, while the palate is zippy and zesty, but filled with apple and banana flavors. A tangy, precise finish with tangerine notes is the final act.

Penascal 2004 Tempranillo (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)
Best Buy
Price
$7
Penascal has emerged as one of those value brands that delivers. This installment of Tempranillo is full of berry, prune and leather aromas, while the palate is creamy and rather full, with smooth berry notes and more than adequate richness.

Penascal 2003 Shiraz (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)
Best Buy
Price
$6
Pretty nice for young Syrah grown on the hot plains of Spain. The nose provides more than adequate plum, blackberry and bacon, and the palate is definitely lively, with black cherry and raspberry flavors. A ripe wine with chocolate and balance. Imported by HAB North America.

Penascal 2000 Tempranillo (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)
Best Buy
Price
$7
A little funky and “country style” in the nose, with some cherry lurking in the background. Raspberry and pepper are the predominant flavors, while the finish is broad, with more than a touch of wood. Fairly modest in strength, but more than adequate.

Perfectly nice and fresh, with fruity springtime aromas that offers slight touches of nettle and citrus. Tropical flavors emerge from the spritzy palate, while the finish is both sweet and spicy. Shows some residual sugar but not too much. Imported by HAB North America.

Penascal 2007 Tempranillo-Shiraz (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)

Price
$10
Uncomplicated and dominated by red fruit aromas and flavors. This is your everyday type of red wine that could probably be made from just about any grape or blend of grapes. Here, Tempranillo and 15% Shiraz make for a dry, mildly oaky red with freshness and little else. Fine if you’re not looking for anything special.

Penascal 2006 Rosé Tempranillo (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)

If a little left-over sugar doesn't bother you than this wine will register in a positive way. For beginners, the bouquet dances with rose hip, red licorice and cherry notes, and next the palate has real flavor and layering. Yes, it's kind of sweet and manufactured. But it's also got zest and pleasant pomegranate and pink grapefruit flavors.

Penascal 2004 Shiraz (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León)
Best Buy
Price
$7
Fairly deep and dark, with ripe plum and blackberry aromas. Transitions to meaty black cherry and plum flavors, which are followed by a round finish accented by chocolate and mocha. Medium to full-bodied; good value in basic red wine.
