Penny's Hill 1999 Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

Blackberry, cream and a doughy note on the nose open to attractive cherry-licorice and coffee flavors. This is medium-weight and complex, with olive, caramel, mineral and earth notes, though not particularly deep. Closes with a tangy, peppery finish. A split-decision for our panel, but enjoyed by most tasters.

Honey and hay accent flavors and aromas of white peach and pear. The two grape components complement each other well, with Viognier giving some lift on the nose, and some heft on the palate. Very good. Imported by Epicurean Wines.

Penny's Hill 2002 Chardonnay (McLaren Vale)

Aromas are of sweet-smelling nectarines and melon. The panel was unanimous in describing this wine as harmonious—medium in body, but soft in demeanor, with all the parts in order. Flavors are of nectarine and mango, with toast and vanilla accents, and continue on through the finish.

Penny's Hill 2003 Red Dot Shiraz (McLaren Vale-Langhorne Creek)

The nose offers a host of red aromas, including stewy, almost tomatoey fruit, and pretty red pencil eraser. A medium-sized wine on the palate, this Shiraz reprises the familiar red berries-plum-earth-oak theme, but does it well.
