Pepper Tree 2003 Grand Reserve Chardonnay (Wrattonbully)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $34
One of the most impressive white wines I’ve had this year. Its nose deals a different fragrance every time you go back to it: nut, focused yellow fruit, cola, then fresh baked pastry. It’s multilayered on the palate, and pretty tight, with apricots dressed up in cream around the wide, soft edges, and a nucleus of tight, tart citrus. Zesty, consistent and compelling…  — D.T.  (6/1/2006)

Pepper Tree 2000 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra)

  1. $100
A steak lover’s Cab made in an old-school style, sturdy but not brash. Has its share of oak, to be sure, but it’s the “dry tannins and black pepper flavors” kind, not the toast-and-nut route. Red plum and cherry fruit are at its firm core. Enjoyable and traditional. Imported by Pan Pacific Wines.  — D.T.  (8/1/2006)

Pepper Tree 2004 Grand Reserve Tannat (Wrattonbully)

  1. $58
Has aromas of eucalyptus and earth, with more of the same on the palate accenting very taut mixed fruit. Layered and complex with chenille-like tannins; not a massive-sized nor overly tannic version of Tannat. Would pair nicely with braised pork in sauce. Imported by Pan Pacific Wines.  — D.T.  (8/1/2006)

Pepper Tree 2003 Grand Reserve Shiraz (Wrattonbully)

  1. $55
A crisp, cool style of Shiraz—if you think “eucalyptus” equals “medicinal,” this probably isn’t your cup of tea. But there’s a lot to like about this wine’s gumtree, black pepper and blackberry aromas, and the way that its earth-clay feel steals the show on the palate. Has blueberries and blackberries at its core, and a dusting of cinnamon arund the edges. Crisp…  — D.T.  (6/1/2006)

Pepper Tree 2005 Grand Reserve Chardonnay (Orange)

  1. $28
Full-bodied, round and soft, this is an easy-drinking Chardonnay with ample complexity. Hints of smoke and honey accent ripe melon scents on the nose, while the palate adds buttery notes of Golden Delicious apples and smoky flavors of grilled yellow plums. Drink now.  — J.C.  (5/1/2007)

Pepper Tree 2004 Reserve Shiraz (Wrattonbully)

  1. $25
From the relatively new growing region of Wrattonbully, this Shiraz features exotic peach and apricot-like aromas and flavors, backed by some herbal notes and a pinch of peppery spice. Picks up additional spice and even some tea nuances on the finish. It’s a bit out of the ordinary, but tasty and unique.  — J.C.  (5/1/2007)

Pepper Tree 2004 Grand Reserve Merlot (Wrattonbully)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $41
Features some herbal overtones to the plummy fruit, also some leather nuances to the bouquet, but offers up a soft, creamy mouthful of plum and chocolate-like fruit. The leathery notes and a metallic hint on the finish may put off fans of squeaky-clean wines, but this still has plenty to commend it. Drink now.  — J.C.  (5/1/2007)

Pepper Tree 2004 Reserve Merlot (Wrattonbully)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
Shows some vegetal notes of tomato and cherry peppers, but despite that indication of underripeness the tannins are supple enough, ending soft and dusty on the tongue.  — J.C.  (5/1/2007)
