Smart shoppers should be able to find this for well below the sky-scraping suggested price, and what a fabulous gift it would make. It’s inky and tight, with spicy oak atop blackberry fruit. It’s the epitome of a tight, young Tempranillo wine, and the finish is downright peppery. The tannins are fairly monstrous now, indicating that it could benefit from five or…

Another fine Ribera from this great vintage. Here you’ll find some orange peel and cinnamon aromas with just a sprinkling of grassy green. It’s earthy and packed full of plum, cocoa and black-fruit flavors. A fine touch of oak graces the long finish. Initial impressions and Pesquera’s history for making ageable wines suggest that it will knit together fully a few…

Cedary from its long stay in American oak, it’s also tightly wound and in need of six months to a year of cellaring to allow it to fill out. Despite its reticence, there’s great intensity of raspberry and cherry fruit that lingers on the finish. Lucia, Alejandro’s eldest daughter, says this wine should be consumed over the next 3–5 years; I suspect it will drink…

Full, tight and entering its prime, this classic Spanish red offers big aromas of leather, blackberry, violets and dried brush. Dense on the palate, with flavors of black olive, tobacco and racy black fruit. Chewy and chocolaty on the finish, with a wash of real-deal tannins. Will age well for at least another five years. Imported by Classical Wines.

Deep and packed with aromas of cola, earth and violets. It’s open from the gun, with a round, plummy texture, bright fruit and nuances of chocolate and coffee. Very full and balanced, with a good attack, middle and finish. Drink now or hold for several years.

Featuring supple cherries marked by plenty of vanilla and toast, this is an easy-drinking wine made for current consumption. A good effort from a miserable vintage, this should be drunk over the next 2–3 years.

Cedar and vanilla aromas beautifully complement the blackberry fruit. Add in spicy complexities of clove and sandalwood, along with a rich smoked-meat nuance, and this medium-weight wine is another winning vintage from Alejandro Fernandez.

Smooth, clean and dark, with charcoal, earth and dried-fruit aromas. For this winery’s basic red, you get quite a lot: herbal cherry, plum and berry flavors and a warm, spicy finish that has plenty of acid-based verve. Bright and lively; best with food.
