Phoenix 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $28
Pours inky black, and smells young and backward. Lots of airing reveals blackberry jam, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla and toast. Drinks soft, velvety, luscious and complex. Good berry fruit is supported by firm, dry tannins. Lovely now, and best consumed in the next year or so to capture its vibrant youth.  — S.H.  (11/15/2003)

Phoenix 2000 Reserve Pinot Noir (Napa Valley)

  1. $23
Dark and earthy, a wine that might be a Rhône blend, it’s that deep in stone fruits and herbs. But the tannins are distinctly Pinot-esque, light and silky. Strange for a Pinot, and lacking varietal delicacy, but a good wine nonetheless, with rich flavors and a long finish.  — S.H.  (12/1/2003)

Phoenix 2000 Blood of Jupiter Sangiovese (Napa Valley)

  1. $20
Looks rich in the glass, and smells vibrant and alive, with black cherry marmalade scents spiced up with black pepper. Drinks very light on the tongue, with soft acidity and dry, pliant tannins. The cherry flavors are good, but you wish for a firmer structure.  — S.H.  (9/1/2003)

Phoenix 2000 Reserve Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
Shows typical communal flavors of peach, apple and tangerine fruit, with dusty spices and an overlay of oak that adds vanilla and toast notes. ItÕs a candied wine, sweetly flavorful but soft and a bit simple.  — S.H.  (9/12/2002)

Phoenix 1999 Blood of Jupitor Sangiovese (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Takes the soft, supple approach to this varietal, with pleasant berry flavors, very low acidity and barely any tannins, and a dry, bitter finish. ItÕs a one-dimensional wine that really needs foods to show best.  — S.H.  (9/12/2002)
