Piero Busso 1999 Gallina Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)

  1. $174
Available only in magnums, Busso’s ’99 Gallina is a standout that should easily age past 2010. It shows some new oak in its scents of toast and vanilla, but also ample cherry fruit and strong elements of earth and tobacco. The finish is long and mouthwatering, yet still firm in its youth.  — W.E.  (4/2/2004)

Piero Busso 1996 Vigna Majano Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $20
Dense as crude oil; the color is opaque purple. Definitely an earthy, tight wine, with precise but still plump cherry fruit touched off with the requisite chocolate. A great take on Barbera, with some age already helping it out. Plenty of wood and licorice on the finish.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Piero Busso 2008 Mondino Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)

This sweetly perfumed expression of Nebbiolo offers pretty aromas of fragrant blue flower and scented candle. The wine opens with a bright garnet color and drying tannins that would match delicate pasta with game meat sauce.  — M.L.  (9/1/2011)

Piero Busso 1999 Vigna Borgese Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)

  1. $57
The cedary, creamy, vanilla-laden nose comes across as a bit too “international.” The mouthfeel is pleasantly chewy, but the flavors are limited to citrus and cedar, finishing with furry-textured wood tannins.  — W.E.  (4/2/2004)

Piero Busso 2003 Majano Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $30
Weirdly floral and perfumed—a potential turn-on for some tasters, while others may be turned off. It’s relatively light in body for a wine carrying 14.5% alcohol, with floral grape and cherry flavors dominating. Tastes sweetly candied, balanced by bright acids. Imported by Vias Imports.  — J.C.  (3/1/2006)

Piero Busso 1997 Vigna Majano Dolcetto (Dolcetto d'Alba)

  1. $19
Strange aromas of sulfur and soy sauce mar the nose, and then flavors of tomato and dried cherries come into play. It’s hardly a stately wine, but it’s bright enough to qualify as a reasonable quaff, though the price may prohibit that.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)
