Howell Mountain has been the source of Piña’s best Cabs, and this single-vineyard bottling shows stunning concentration and complexity. It’s closed and tannic now, in the manner of Howell Mountain Cabs, but enormous in ripe black currant fruit, with the power and focus to age for many years. Best after 2009 and through 2017, but only with impeccable cellar conditions.

This is a wine that will change your perception of Howell Mountain Cabs as wines that you have to cellar to enjoy. Yes, it’s tannic enough for the long haul, but so good now, it’s hard not to drink it. Packed with ripe, rich currant, cherry and sweet tobacco fruit, with vanilla and cocoa seasonings, it’s absolutely delicious. Drink now through 2012.

Classic Rutherford Cab. Dry, dusty and slightly herbal, with refined, jammy flavors of red and black cherries, currants, mocha and cedar. The alcohol is a little high, giving this 100% Cabernet a warm, full-bodied feel. The tannins suggest mid-term aging. 2013–2018.

The wine is very big and tannic, and unless you like really young Cabs, it’s not ready to be opened. The tannins are the culprit, hard and firm. But they’re ripely sweet, thanks to modern viticulture, and the black currant flavors are strong, so the wine should hold for a number of years. Try after 2009.
