Piña 2007 Buckeye Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $85
Piña has a spectacular record with this wine, and indeed with all their Cabs from Howell Mountain. The ’07 is notable for its superb structure. It has pristine tannins and a good, dry mouthfeel, with very rich flavors of blackberries, currants, chocolate and cedar that are grounded with notes of anise and sweet herbs. Very fine and dramatic, this 100% Cab should…  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Piña 2005 Buckeye Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $78
Howell Mountain has been the source of Piña’s best Cabs, and this single-vineyard bottling shows stunning concentration and complexity. It’s closed and tannic now, in the manner of Howell Mountain Cabs, but enormous in ripe black currant fruit, with the power and focus to age for many years. Best after 2009 and through 2017, but only with impeccable cellar conditions.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Piña 2006 Buckeye Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $85
This outstanding wine shows the best features of Howell Mountain. It’s gigantic in concentrated flavors of blackberries and black cherries, cocoa and cedar, with hints of wild herbs and even flowers. And although it’s tannic, there’s a mellow mouthfeel that permits drinking now. But it should age well through 2018.  — S.H.  (9/1/2009)

Piña 2001 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $54
This is a wine that will change your perception of Howell Mountain Cabs as wines that you have to cellar to enjoy. Yes, it’s tannic enough for the long haul, but so good now, it’s hard not to drink it. Packed with ripe, rich currant, cherry and sweet tobacco fruit, with vanilla and cocoa seasonings, it’s absolutely delicious. Drink now through 2012.  — S.H.  (11/1/2005)

Piña 2008 Firehouse Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  1. $85
Shows the voluptuous texture and opulence that announce a fine Napa Cabernet. Rich in blackberry, black cherry, chocolate and smoky oak flavors, it’s wrapped into fleshy tannins. Made from 100% Cabernet, it should develop bottle complexities over the next 6–8 years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

  1. $85
Classic Rutherford Cab. Dry, dusty and slightly herbal, with refined, jammy flavors of red and black cherries, currants, mocha and cedar. The alcohol is a little high, giving this 100% Cabernet a warm, full-bodied feel. The tannins suggest mid-term aging. 2013–2018.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Piña 2006 D'Adamo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
Young and nervy, with mouthwatering acidity and primary flavors of blackberries, sour cherry candy, dusty herbs, violets and smoky oak. Fine now with a juicy steak, but should develop in the bottle for up to six years.  — S.H.  (9/1/2009)

Piña 2005 D'Adamo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $72
The wine is very big and tannic, and unless you like really young Cabs, it’s not ready to be opened. The tannins are the culprit, hard and firm. But they’re ripely sweet, thanks to modern viticulture, and the black currant flavors are strong, so the wine should hold for a number of years. Try after 2009.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)
