Pine & Post 2004 Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Best Buy

Solid and clean, this well-made Chardonnay includes a generous (20%) proportion of Sémillon, which fleshes it out. The dominant flavors are tangerine and citrus, and the wine sets up crisply in the mouth without feeling stripped or sour in any way.  — P.G.  (4/1/2006)

Pine & Post 2004 Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Best Buy
  1. $5
An excellent Merlot; certainly the best at this price point that I have tasted in the past 15 years. Good, solid black cherry fruit is accented with coffee ground flavors. None of the usual vegetal flavors that plague wines at this price, nor are the tannins anything but ripe and smooth. Best of all, there is real fruit concentration through the midpalate.  — P.G.  (4/1/2006)

Pine & Post 2005 Chardonnay (Washington)

Don’t look for richness at this price, but you will find a clean, straightforward wine, with supple, ripe fruit flavors and surprising midpalate weight. There’s nothing flabby, watery, thin or fake about it.  — P.G.  (12/1/2007)

Fruit forward, with sweet clean scents of berry and black cherry, this fills the mouth with pretty pop fruit flavors. The darker grapes in the blend—Cab Franc, Syrah and Lemberger—add color and a little tannic bite.  — P.G.  (8/1/2010)

Pine & Post 2006 Chardonnay (Washington)

Sharp, spicy, tastes of apples, with plenty of flesh. Ripe and straightforward, showing none of the sugar, vanilla and excessive oak chip flavors of most cheap Chardonnays. Solid winemaking, juicy acids, and a fine food wine for six bucks.  — P.G.  (6/1/2009)

Pine & Post 2006 Merlot (Washington)

  • Best Buy
  1. $6
For Washington Merlot this really sets the bar for bargain basement wines. It’s solidly crafted, with clean black cherry fruit, firm acidity, light but supple tannins, and a long, refreshing finish. No hint of excess green or stem or anything funky; it’s easily the best $6 Merlot in the country.  — P.G.  (6/1/2009)

Strawberries rule here, gliding into a substantial finish with none of the faux flavors (excessive tobacco, vanilla, etc.) that mar too many inexpensive Merlots.  — P.G.  (9/1/2011)

Grapey and fruit-powered, this easy-drinking Cabernet drinks like a fresh Zinfandel. Strawberry fruit is at the core, with light details of leaf and mineral. A good picnic wine.  — P.G.  (8/1/2010)
