Among richly structured Bierzo wines, this is a dandy. Thick, jammy aromas with a cookie quality kick it off, and then comes a tidal wave of blackberry, pastry and mocha flavors. By now you’re saying “wow,” and then comes a warm, subtle, chocolaty finish. More rich and hedonistic than varietal or terroir-driven. Drink now–2012.

Poised and focused Mencía with lush, bold aromas that are powerful and alluring. The palate is healthy and stout, with tannic grip that props up black fruit, toast and charcoal flavors. Black pepper, spice and licorice are the finishing notes.

A bit rubbery and earthy at first but with time it develops, yielding syrupy berry aromas, woodsy oak notes and dried cheese. The palate feel is deep, lush and silky smooth, while it tastes of ripe berry, coconut and vanilla. Softer than some, with a lush texture that will allow for near-term drinking.

Rich, earthy and appealing Bierzo, with blackberry aromas and a touch of fine herbs. The palate is puffed up and beefy, with creamy black fruit flavors and accents of prune and smoked meat. Enduring on the finish, with a roasted character. Borderline syrupy; drink now through 2010.
