Plumpjack 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)
-
$58
Really first rate, fat, fleshy, flashy and sensual. Hard to exaggerate the beauty of the currant and cherry fruit, so ripe, polished and pure, and the sweet finesse of the tannins. In a few years the inherent structure will kick in, tightening the wine and guaranteeing it a long life.

Plumpjack 1999 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Smooth, rich and lush, with firm tannins that support a wonderfully complex blend of plum, blackberry, black cherry, coffee, anise, chocolate, herb and earth flavors. Lingers on the finish. —J.M.

Plumpjack 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)
-
$78
Made from the estate, in the center of Oakville, this fancy Cabernet is very ripe and oaky, and solidly in the opulent, flamboyant cult style. It floods the mouth with melted blackberries, cherries, raspberries, cocoa and sweet new oak, framed in tannins that are rich and refined. Bone dry, it’s a flashy wine to drink now, and will mature for a decade.

Plumpjack 2002 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

$62
Not in the same ripeness league as the ’01, but still an enormously attractive wine. It’s just a bit leaner, but perhaps more structured. Shows blackberry, currant, coffee, oak and herb flavors and some fairly big tannins. Nice now, but should hold and improve through 2010.

Plumpjack 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)
-
$72
This is the winery’s regular estate Cab, and it’s good, elegant wine. Dry and balanced, it shows blackberry, cassis and new oaky, smoky flavors; it’s rich in smooth, ripe, dense tannins. It’s a masculine wine in need of some time in the cellar, though not one of PlumpJack’s greater Cabernets, marked as it is by some sharpness. Drink now through 2010.
