Poggio Antico 1999 Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $125
Here’s a huge, stately wine with a brick-based structure and mounds of lovely oak that is already so well integrated you barely notice it. Quite tannic, and will require come cellaring. When you do drink it, expect warm flavors, liqueur-soaked berry fruit and a mile-long finish. Hold until 2010, at least. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Poggio Antico 2007 Madre Red (Toscana)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
A 50-50 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet, this wine is rich and opulent, without being at all heavy or exaggerated. The mouthfeel is smooth, soft but structured and there is a long fruit and spice flavored finish.  — M.L.  (12/15/2010)

Poggio Antico 2004 Altero Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $115
The wine’s beauty and intensity are impossible to match. There’s enormous complexity of aromas here with chocolate, black tar, spice, blackberry, forest currant and tobacco. You’ll pick up toasted oak tones as well, but they are carefully balanced within the naturally supple and smooth essence of this standout Brunello.  — M.L.  (6/1/2009)

Poggio Antico 2001 Riserva Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $169
This is an outstanding wine with a long list of adjectives to describe the bouquet: black olive, mesquite wood, black currant, anise, licorice, clove, dried sage and leather all play a role. There’s intensity and complexity here and the wine offers smooth tannins backed by lingering notes of mineral and spice.  — M.L.  (11/1/2009)

Poggio Antico 1999 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $76
The color is literally purple, while the nose is layered with toasty oak and coffee atop pound cake and berry jam. The palate is powerful yet restrained, and with a mile-long finish propped up by jackhammer tannins, you just know it’s built to last. This will drink fabulously in about six years.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)

Poggio Antico 2001 Madre Cabernet Sauvignon-Sangiovese (Toscana)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $64
One sniff delivers heavenly aromas of liqueur, plum and licorice. This 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet represents the Super Tuscan concept at its best. The fruit is dynamite, the oak front and center, and the aging potential great. Hold for about five years then unleash an avalanche of class and flavor.  — M.S.  (10/1/2004)

Poggio Antico 2006 Altero Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $96
Here’s a modern, plush and extracted expression of Sangiovese Grosso that has been enhanced by elegant oak aging. Still young, it exhibits notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, smoke and resin along with a solid base of cassis and dried berry fruit. The texture here is polished and smooth with zesty spice on the close.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)
