Ponzi 2008 Reserve Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
A gorgeous wine, lush and refined from the first sniff to the last swallow. Rose petals, cotton candy, chocolate-covered cherries—it’s a date in a bottle. As the wine rolls across the palate it seems to gain depth and detail, while keeping the exceptionally pretty fruit flavors front and center. Silky and lightly spicy, with cinnamon, toast, mocha and tobacco…  — P.G.  (3/1/2011)

Ponzi 2008 Abetina Vineyard Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $100
This two-acre site dates back to 1975; this is only the fourth time that Ponzi has offered it as a designate. Muscular and authoritative, it is still compact and somewhat unyielding. Dark cherry and cassis fruit is packed with iron filings, coffee grounds and black licorice. Winemaker Luisa Ponzi does her usual excellent job of putting the polish on outstanding…  — P.G.  (3/1/2011)

Ponzi 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
Plum and pepper, berries and bark; ripe cherries and sharp spices give this lovely Pinot Noir more than its share of cascading flavors; it just keeps on surprising you with something new. Despite all the razzle dazzle, it’s a balanced wine whose ripe fruits roll gracefully into a finish loaded with creamy mocha.  — P.G.  (2/1/2009)

Ponzi 1998 Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  1. $25
Tons of raspberry, vanilla and licorice, backed by spice, coffee and all sorts of size and depth. The complexity is excellent, but so is the straightforward attitude it shows. Given time, it unfolds in layer upon layer of excitement. A gem of an appellation wine; it makes you wonder just how good the Ponzi Reserve will be.  — M.S.  (12/1/2000)

Ponzi 2008 Reserve Chardonnay (Willamette Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
Strongly oaky at first sniff, this barrel-fermented reserve went through complete malolactic fermentation and a year and a half of barrel aging. The complexity comes out as it breathes open, a mélange of nuanced fruit including guava, peach, pineapple and green apple. Skin phenolics (from whole-cluster pressing) add some bite to the lengthy finish.  — P.G.  (8/1/2011)

Ponzi 2005 Abetina Vineyard Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  1. $100
From a vineyard planted in 1975, this rarest of Ponzi wines has been released in only four vintages since. It’s an interesting, seductive wine with a silky entry and a strong citrus streak. Cherry fruit is highlighted with tart acids that taste like peaches and apricots. The wine is seamless and juicy, with beautiful balance and lightly layered notes of herb and…  — P.G.  (2/1/2008)

Ponzi 2005 Riesling (Willamette Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
This is the first dry Riesling since 1993, though it was a Ponzi hallmark from 1974 until it was dropped. Fashions have brought dry Riesling into play again, and this is a textbook example mixing Meyer lemon, chamomile tea and even a bit of peppery spice. Unfortunately just 70 cases were made.  — P.G.  (12/1/2006)

Ponzi 1999 Reserve Chardonnay (Willamette Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
This reserve shows nice lime/citrus scents, hints of honey and a bit of sandalwood, which is quite interesting. It’s an elegant, lightly spicy, complex and subtle wine, with delicious nuances and a dancer’s balance.  — P.G.  (8/1/2002)
