This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine shows why Cab is the grape that made Coonawarra famous. Dense and Port-like in color, the full nose displays cassis, fruit, leather, tobacco, green olive and eucalyptus. Rich and supple on the palate, it still has plenty of backbone. Punters Corner 1998 Shiraz (Coonawarra)

$26
The tart, sour cherry fruit merely serves to support the leathery, earthy, spicy elements; the fruit never really takes charge. That said, the wine does have plenty to offer. The dried-spice aromas are an attractive blend of cracked black pepper, cinnamon and clove the mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Finishs long, with hints of espresso. —J.C.

Punters Corner 2002 Shiraz (Coonawarra)
-
$28
This wine feels well built and sturdy in the mouth, with smooth, integrated tannins. Its flavors and aromas, though, run the gamut from rhubarb to sour stone fruit to slight briary, stemmy notes. Tealike tannins on the finish have a shrill edge. Imported by Scott Street Portfolio.
