A whiff of peach or apricot gives this Vinho Verde a little extra interest beyond its green apple and citrus flavors. Crisp and refreshing, with a tart, chalky finish.

Slightly floral nose boasts hints of apple and pear alongside more prominent notes of mint and fresh greens. Plump apple and pear flavors on the palate, finishing clean and herbal.

With is purple color, aromas of bitter chocolate and coffee flavors along with acidity and raspberry fruits, this is an easy but appealing wine. Finishes dry. Best Buy. —R.V.

Clean, with a light spritzy feel on the palate, this offers nice hay, melon and even tangerine notes on the nose. The mouth shows more of the same, with green apple and herb flavors as well. Completely correct Vinho Verde, this finishes dry, with a mineral citrus tang that fairly begs for seafood.

The wine comes from Aveleda’s latest purchase, a vineyard in Bairrada region. Made under the supervision of Bordeaux winemaker Denis Dubourdieu, it strives to combine the wild dark acidity, black fruit and wood flavors of Portugal with the more restrained elegance of Bordeaux. At this stage, the combination needs time to work—maybe three or four years would help. —R.V.
